Hawaiihemd wrote: Tue Dec 06, 2022 9:28 am No, sdb1 is not mounted, as there is no entry in the MOUNTPOINT column.

Create a directory under /media for example "extdisk":
sudo mkdir /media/extdisk
Then mount sdb1 to that directory:
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/extdisk
Then copy the contents of manda's home there:
cp /home/manda /media/extdisk/
Hi Hawaiihemd.

I will try this as soon as the terminal stops deleting Timeshift data...
-------
UPDATE:
-------
OK - I stopped the process because it took FOREVER!

I then created the directory, mounted sdb1 but received this error when trying to copy at the last command...
[ cp: -r not specified: omitting directory '/home/manda' ]

Oh, my mistake. Make that
cp -r /home/manda /media/extdisk/ and it should work.

Try logging in normally now. When wrongly set (and the defaults are wrong, at least in my opinion), Timeshift is known for eating disk space like crazy, under certain conditions. Your cleaning action should have freed up a lot of space.

Pjotr!

I saw that IT DID INCREASE disc space for the short while that I ran the "Remove Timeshift" command...

I was just too eager to Copy the home folder...
I am busy now doing that and it seems to be working (taking a looooong time though)

Once I have the data, I will definitely run sudo rm -v -R /timeshift/* again to see if I can gain GUI access once more! I'll be too curious if I don't! Haha...

That worked thanks Hawaiihemd!
It took a little over 3 hours.

I've now copied or backed up all my Mom's precious memories in her home folder! :D

Now I will do again what Pjotr first suggested and retry to delete all Timeshift data fully (not partially) to see if I can restore GUI access...

Guess what Pjotr??! - "Als het reggekom!!!" Hahaha.
You were spot on. It had to be Timeshift related...

I started sudo rm -v -R /timeshift/*/ again...and then I could log in!
(it ran for 2 hours - presumably because of "-R" [Recursive?])
Now I have a backup and access to the original old HDD!

Thank you so much! You were great...!
I will set the Post Name as "SOLVED"!!!
