seeking how to run two desktop sessions at once

Post by SaintDanBert »

QUESTION: Is there some way to have two unique-user desktop sessions on the same laptop display?

QUESTION: Can I use a remote desktop tool and remote into localhost?

QUESTION: Since one can tunnel an X11 session, is there some way to connect to localhost and open a second desktop on the same display?

I know that I can run two unique-user login sessions and see both using screen or similar.
I also know that I can switch users and have two unique-user login sessions but only see one at the time.
I know that there are various remote desktop applications and utilitieis.
I have vague memory of running an X-windows session over an SSH connection.

Why do I want this?
I have multiple unique-user logins on my primary laptop. One login is my professional developer & technical writer user.
This user is almost always active.
I have other unique-user logins that are associated with fraternal organizations and other communities that I participate in.
I routinely switch user among these other logins that I open on any given work-day. There are times when it would be wonderful
if I could see two (or more) at once:
  • split the screen on my laptop
  • have the professional desktop open on one part
  • have a community desktop open on the other part
  • (wish list) use external monitors and have other community desktops open
I've used Linux for many years and consider myself a power user. I can accomplish many sysadmin tasks and do okay, but I am not
any sort of "guru", "expert" or "system wizard"

Thanks in advance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
What about virtual machines? I have two monitors and regularly run Mint on one and Windows on the other. See no reason why you couldn't set up something the same for each account. Need plenty of ram though!
