Linux Mint 21.1 almost 30 seconds after login to show desktop

Post by joaooswaldo »

Hi! I don´t know why, but recently mint is taking almost 30 seconds after the login screen (before it boots very quickly) to show the desktop environment.

Things i have already checked

1) Disabled basically all the startup apps
2) Tried the 5.15.0-56 instead of the newer and currently active 5.15.0-58
3) Tried to update all the apps [noticing that also the "sudo apt upgrade" is ignoring all the packages available, maybe another topic to solve this?]
4) So following some topics suggestions here i updated those packages by typing in terminal "sudo apt install [all those packages available to update]

I tried to check similar topics here but apparently i do not have the same problems.

In my case a similar issue wound up being corruption on a disk.
I went into DISKS and used the command to check the disks, it came back with an error and asked me if I wanted to fix it.
I said yes, and things have been fine ever since.

Well one of my disks(nvme) doesn't show the option to run a SMART test if that is what you meant, but i was able to run the test at least for the hdd though and it passed. Additionally I ran a performance test(also in DISKS) on both using the standard parameters and apparently they are fine.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot of your system before the slowness started? If you do, that would give an idea if the issue is software-related.

Have you recently added any applets to your system? You can check .xsession-errors, a hidden file in your home directory, which lists how long it takes for applets to load. I have seen applets cause an issue like this in the past.

Yes, i have a snapshot from 20 days ago. Should i try to rollback to this one?

Acctually the only applet i added was expo but i've already removed it.

Actually i haven't modified mint that much. The only thing i can remember was the Login Window Wallpaper, but I don't know if could be something related to that.
In fact when i hit the enter button after entering my password it goes to a first black screen(~15s) with a decentralized pointer and then the pointer is recentered to a "new" black screen(~15)(the mouse blinks and recenter). It looks like there is two separate process going on under the hood...
I'm only a regular user and it's based only in some intuition, so i apologize if i wrote something stupid here :)

Everything just looks slow. I don't see any one event causing a major slow-down.

These two lines show the start time of Cinnamon and the fact the first event took nearly 6 seconds to complete. (ms=milliseconds; 1000ms = 1 second)

Code: Select all

Gjs-Message: 13:59:32.861: JS LOG: About to start Cinnamon
Gjs-Message: 13:59:38.567: JS LOG: [LookingGlass/info] Cinnamon.AppSystem.get_default() started in 5703 ms
Then Cinnamon is started and all the applets start loading. I removed some messages, but left in the ones with loading times. Almost 2 seconds to load the corner bar. Just over a second for the calendar. Favorites is just under two seconds. Most everything else loads more quickly.

Here is one really slow item--AppletManager takes 6 seconds. And the overall says Cinnamon took nearly 14 seconds.

Code: Select all

Gjs-Message: 13:59:46.454: JS LOG: [LookingGlass/info] AppletManager started in 6228 ms
Gjs-Message: 13:59:46.457: JS LOG: [LookingGlass/info] Cinnamon took 13596 ms to start
That timing would explain, most likely, the second 15 second segment you mentioned. I'm not sure what the first one might be. We might have to check syslog or journalctl to find out what that one would be. (But that might be searching for a needle in a haystack and not necessarily the easiest thing to do remotely.)

Do you know if you have the most recent BIOS/UEFI installed for your computer? 15 seconds to load Cinnamon seems like a long time for a 9th-gen Intel CPU.

I guess so...

Code: Select all

cat /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_version
V1.33
According to the Acer support website this is the latest version.

It's funny though because yesterday i used that timeshift snapshot that i had and then everything was fast again, until i ran an update today via Update Manager (no terminal) and now it is slow again.

If you open Update Manager and select View > History of Updates, you can see what was changed. Maybe that will give some clues as to what the root cause might be.

If there is any way to generate a log or a better way to share let me know. I took some prints and uploaded to this folder

Is there a way to may the folder public so one does not need a Google sign-in to see them? I found these instructions, but I don't have Google Drive so I don't know if they are still valid.

If not, if the images are less than 200kb, you can attach them to posts using the Attachments tab under the reply box. If they are larger, they can be shared to an image-sharing site such as ibb or imgur.

I can see them now. I will go through the list and see if there is anything in addition to the Nvidia driver update which I think might cause something like this to happen.

You have both a kernel update and an Nvidia driver update in that listing. Those would be my first suspects.

To test that theory, you would roll back to the snapshot and then install all the updates except the ones for the kernel and the ones which have 525 in them (those are the Nvidia driver file updates even though some of them do not have Nvidia in their names). The flatpaks are their own little universe so you can let those Nvidia updates install.

It's possible something else might be causing the slowdown, but testing and process of elimination is how i would test it to see what might be the problem.

I don't have any flatpaks so I don't know how/when they load in relation to the operating system. My guess would be they do not load until you open the app, but I don't have the same apps you do to know for sure.

I was a fedora user for some years so i got used to flatpaks. Should i avoid them in Mint?

Ok! I'm going to rollback right now so we can test this theory!

I do not know everything. I'm just letting you know I don't know how flatpaks work at startup so I can't answer those questions.

Untill now i only updated the flatpaks. Now I'm going to make another snapshot and then update all the packages but the ones with 525 and the kernel

Did you have the "two sets" of start-ups with this last one? You initially described the problem was as if it was starting two times with 15 seconds to reaching the first cursor and then another 15 seconds for the desktop.

So Firefox is the problem? Is there something automatically connecting in Firefox--a network connection of some type? Some add-on maybe?

Or am I misunderstanding what you said?

I don't know...what i meant is i didn't update anything at all after the rollback except for firefox and timeshift, but i also tried to disable everything in firefox and it is the same.
It looks like the "first stage" after the enter my password, when i see the black screen and i can move the pointer, is the one that takes more than 10s in it until the pointer centers("second stage") and cinnamon loads.
