Wallpaper resolution resets to Nvidia's display port monitor resolution

Post by redhat_boy »

Hi,

I am facing a weird issue. I have basically three monitors:

2 x 34 inch ultra wide LG monitors which supports up to 3840x2160 screen resolution.
1 x 22 inch Dell monitor which supports up to 1920x1080 screen resolution.

One 34 inch monitor connected to on-board Intel Graphic Card HDMI port:

Code: Select all

HDMI-0 connected primary 2560x1080+2560+378 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 798mm x 334mm
   2560x1080 59.98 + 74.99* 50.00
   3840x2160 29.97 25.00 23.98 23.98
   2560x1440 59.95
   1920x1080 75.00 60.00 59.94 50.00
   1680x1050 59.95
   1600x900 60.00
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1280x800 59.81
   1280x720 60.00 59.94 50.00
   1152x864 60.00
   1024x768 75.03 60.00
   800x600 75.00 60.32
   720x576 50.00
   720x480 59.94
   640x480 75.00 59.94 59.93
Second 34 inch monitor connected to Nvidia Graphic HDMI port:

Code: Select all

HDMI-1-1 connected 2560x1080+0+378 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 798mm x 334mm
   2560x1080 59.98 + 74.99* 50.00
   3840x2160 30.00 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98
   2560x1440 59.95
   1920x1080 74.99 60.00 50.00 59.94
   1680x1050 59.88
   1600x900 60.00
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1280x800 59.91
   1152x864 75.00 59.97
   1280x720 60.00 50.00 59.94
   1024x768 75.03 60.00
   832x624 74.55
   800x600 75.00 60.32
   720x576 50.00
   720x480 60.00 59.94
   640x480 75.00 60.00 59.94
And the 22inch Dell Monitor connected to the Display Port on Nvidia Graphic Card.

Code: Select all

DP-1 connected 1080x1920+5120+0 left (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 268mm
   1920x1080 60.00*+ 59.94 50.00
   1600x900 60.00
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1280x720 60.00 59.94 50.00
   1152x864 75.00
   1024x768 75.03 60.00
   800x600 75.00 60.32
   720x576 50.00
   720x480 59.94
   640x480 75.00 59.94 59.93
The issue I am facing here, whenever I set a wallpaper, it fits to all monitor screen resolutions no matter different model and supports different screen resolutions. But when I reboot the machine and the same wallpaper resets to a very low resolution and looks blurred on all screens except the 22inch 1920x1080 screen resolution Dell monitor. I am not sure why it happens like that.

Maybe the 22inch monitor screen resolution 1920x1080 takes precedence on each reboot and the system resets the wallpaper resolution to the same?. I don't know why it happens all of a sudden.

Do you do something after booting to get all wallpapers to fit properly? If so, what steps do you use?

What I find odd, is I assume all three monitors are connected when you boot and you ran the graphics info with all three monitors connected. But only one monitor is showing in the output. It makes me wonder what the Display app settings look like when you first boot.

Correct, I can see this part resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz with the graphic driver always. Does this mean the display port of the Nvidia graphic takes precedence on each reboot and changes the wallpaper resolution accordingly?.

Otherwise, I don't do anything special to set wallpaper. For setting a wallpaper, I simply right-click on the image and choose 'set as wallpaper', that's it.

I suggest checking what is showing in the Displays app and/or the Nvidia X Server settings app to get an idea of what might be happening.

You have not given any information about your computer, but maybe there is some setting in the motherboard which is a factor in the graphics.

Hi, redhat_boy.

What SMG politely suggests, without explicitly saying so,
SMG wrote: Thu Apr 08, 2021 1:48 pmYou have not given any information about your computer, ...
is:
Please, share your complete system information with us, not just the inxi -G part, which you had shared.

Thanks, Karl

You mentioned this in the first post, however, what is the setting in your BIOS/UEFI for graphics? Most desktops do not permit more than one GPU for graphics, but some do permit switching like an Optimus-style laptop can do. I do not know know what is available on your computer's motherboard. Even though you may have a monitor plugged into the iGPU port, Nvidia is probably still be running it.

I suggest making sure you are using the most recent UEFI version which is applicable for your computer/situation.

Check Nvidia X Server Settings to see if all three monitors are recognized in it. If not you might want to check for errors or messages in X Server Log located at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If you would like us to take a look at it, run the following in a terminal
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
and let us know the url it returns.

SMG, thanks for all your points, I went through all of that and all settings look ok.

The weirdest part I found about this is, the resolution issue only happens when I set the rotation of 22 inch Dell monitor to Counterclockwise(90 degrees left) and Graphics automatically takes precedence of the 22 inch Dell Inch monitor resolution 1920x1080 over others. Please note the resolution issue only appears for any wallpaper I set, not for any application windows, web browsers, etc. The resolution issue with wallpaper goes off when I set the rotation of 22 inch Dell Inch monitor back to Normal. This is weird. It only happens on Mint and it works fine on Windows 10 on the same machine. Any idea to workaround this?.

Multiple monitor situations are sometimes more likely to run into bugs because it is difficult for the developers to test all options. It is possible you have run into a bug. If it is a bug, I do not know if it might be in Cinnamon or an underlying program used from the Ubuntu base.

I realize you are not spanning your wallpaper, but maybe something in the discussion on this thread
Spanned wallpaper sizing could be better #114 will give you ideas to investigate.

That issue was posted under "Cinnamon desktop", but when I checked linuxmint / cinnamon-settings-daemon I saw "Background" listed. If you want to report this as a bug, that is probably where it should be placed.

I have not done much work with Backgrounds/Wallpaper, so maybe someone else might have some ideas.
