A new version for your startup screen: bigger and better (Plymouth theme)

Post by sebastjava »

This is a new version for your animated boot screen. This logo here is twice as large as the standard one. My boot screen is full HD: 1920 X 1080 pixels. In my humble opinion, the standard Mint Plymouth theme looked a bit "cheap", being too small for this full HD screen. It almost felt like there was just a small "dot" displayed there. Now this new logo is double-sized at 200 pixels large. This works best on FHD screens, but i also tested it on my old little netbook, with a 1024 X 600 pixels boot screen. On this small netbook this new logo looks a bit big, but it still works.

Simple installation instructions and download:
https://github.com/SebastJava/plymouth- ... int-logo-2

Rest assured, I've also included some simple instructions on how to revert to the standard theme in case you aren't happy.

P.S.: This is just a little enhancement made on the standard Mint Plymouth theme. There is nothing hazardous here: the script remains unchanged, only the images are changed. I should have told Clem i found his Plymouth theme too small and too subtly contrasted when it was time to do so, but i was too shy or unsure at the time. Once again. So here i make my own spin off, again. :)

New version just released now...
The spinner now has a shining, blurred centre so it does not interfere with the logo drawing. See the updated preview on the OP.

Yeah it's very nice and I'd use it too if I didn't have my nvidia card in :wink:
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Hmm... I didn’t know about this issue. Are you having a very low resolution, such as 640X480, so you find my Plymouth version too big, or is it something worst, like no image at all? In any case, you could try the top answer from there: https://askubuntu.com/questions/362722/ ... u-releases. You are probably going to do some experiments, so you should start by making a copy of this /etc/default/grub for a possible revert.

I guess you could also try all the best possibilities: multiple resolutions can be specified, including the default auto, so it is recommended that you edit the line to resemble GRUB_GFXMODE=desired_resolution,fallback_such_as_1024x768,auto (no spaces after the commas.) Example:

Code: Select all

GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080,1440x900,1024x600,auto
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
If nothing works, maybe you could try to set separate values for the Grub and Plymouth screens:

Code: Select all

GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080,1440x900,1024x600,auto
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1920x1080,1440x900,1024x600,auto
That’s just my lucky guess based on some remote memories from around year 2018, having similar issues on a little Netbook...

There is no pressure here. Skip this if you don’t have time. You are already a great supporter... But i am curious...

Re: Double-sized startup screen logo with better animation: install this new Plymouth theme !

Post by antikythera »

Thanks for the suggestions, I had tried those tricks already but it still doesn't make Plymouth display the boot logo. I left the correct resolution for my panel in after fiddling so at least grub looks crisp. Kind of stupid nvidia still have not managed to release a proprietary driver that renders grub and Plymouth properly, they have had decades to do fix the issue. I had to deal with the same problem on my old HP Compaq nx9105 notebook too with Mint 9.

double clicking on INSTALLER.sh does nothing, even with Properties > Execute ( which it already was when unzipped )

this is what I get, XED pops up 19.3 Cinnamon

I re-edited the README.md presentation file: the installation procedure is now more "universal". :)
now on https://github.com/SebastJava/plymouth- ... int-logo-2
Does it works, now?

ah, I overlooked that. had fixed it in a prior Mint version... alas memory does not carry over to newer versions.

I tried to get it to run in Terminal, it refused to work right...
this did not work either: type `chmod +x plymouth-theme-mint-logo-2/INSTALLER.sh` in the Terminal
said it could not find folder ....xyz...

but all is good, and it a much more pleasant thing to see than the staid little green blob.

I'm not sure I understand. It didn't work at first but now it is okay? The instructions on the README have been changed: a little less easy but universal...

version 4: Celestial Orbits

Click to see this animated GIF preview... (low resolution and cropped to fit here...)

This Plymouth theme here is based on the current official Linux Mint Plymouth theme. Same engine. Different images and settings. This version 4 is just a new design. If you appreciate my older designs, there is no need for you to upgrade. It is up to you.

The thing is... I was not perfectly satisfied with the current official Plymouth theme. I find it is too small for my big HD screen, and the animation is too subtle. But if you try to make this animation more contrasted, then it interferes with the design of the logo. And i guess some people would consider it to be too flashy. So, i had this other idea, this version number 4, right here.
  • Based on the official, trustworthy engine.
  • Automatic installer included.
  • Easy revert if not satisfied.
