Official Mint-X theme with blue instead of green colour?

Post by qx0195263 »

Dear Linux Mint developers,

I think the Mint-X theme is a nice theme. But what I really dislike about it is that it uses green colour.

This is not meant as an offense. And I realize that green is probably chosen because of the "Mint" branding.

However, the green colour is, IMHO, quite uneasy on the eyes and does not really look nice IMHO.

I personally think blue would be a much nicer colour for the theme.

So, would there be any chance you could provide an official Mint-X theme that is the same as the current one, except with everything green in it replaced by blue (including icons)?

It doesn't really have to entirely replace the green theme, but could live alongside it. It would be fine if you would offer it as a variant for those who don't like the green colour.

I also could imagine that it would not be too difficult to change the colour?

So, any chance you could do it?

It would be much appreciated.

Regards

The Gtk theme was completely redone in Mint 17 but it's still green. Mint you know :). I have been considering doing a blue version of the theme because I know it is something that has been requested in the past, and is something I would use as well. If this would be part of the official install or just something shared with the community I'm not sure.

Changing the color scheme is a bit of work, especially for the icon theme. You might be better off finding another icon theme that uses a blue folder set.
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.

Hello,

first of all: thanks for the fast response.

Are you the creator of the official Mint-X theme?

I came across the following thread:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=142533

IMHO, the theme certainly looks a lot better with the blue colour in the picture in post #2 for example, plus it's a lot easier on the eyes.

I really think there should be an official Mint-X theme (including icons) with blue colour instead of green colour (i.e. part od the official install). It should at least be an official viariant or, even better, replace the green one.
JosephM wrote:Mint you know :).
Well, even though I understand the reasoning behind that, I don't think it has to be that way.

I mean, the Mint-X theme in the Linux Mint KDE edition for example also has blue colour, not green. And it's still "Mint".

I think it would be enough if the Linux Mint logo is green. It doesn't mean everything else has to be green (especially if other colours, like blue for example, would look better and would be easier on the eyes). Then again, even the Linux Mint logo is blue in the Linux Mint KDE edition  . So much for "Mint"... :P

By the way, and please don't take that as offense: I also think that the green colour of the default forum theme (called "Minty") looks horrible. It's quite hard on the eyes. I instantly switched to the "subsilver2" theme, which is a lot easier on the eyes.

The folder icons in Linux Mint are more or less simply elementary folder icons but with green colour, aren't they?

The elementary folder icons are blue by default though, see:

http://elementaryos.org/journal/new-folder-icons-luna
http://www.deviantart.com/art/elementary-Icons-65437279

So should'nt it be rather easy to change them to blue as well?

By the way, looking at the this picture from the page mentioned above:

http://elementaryos.org/uploads/content ... 7gpIjF.png

I don't think the folder icons need to have the same colour as the theme colour (i.e. blue or green).

They could also be neutral in colour, using a yellow tone like the folder icons in Microsoft Windows 7 for example, see the picture over there:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... =windows-7

I think I would actually prefer that.

I really doubt the default theme is going to be replaced by something that doesn't use the green color. I happen to be in the camp that doesn't think it should be. As far as adding an official version that uses blue, I can talk to clem and the other devs and see what the opinion is on that. I don't speak for the Mint devs but I think part of the reason for having only one theme by default comes down to maintenance. In the past the Ubuntu base that Mint uses changed every 6 months and often brought new Gtk versions and things broken in the themes. With Mint sticking to the LTS base for 2 years this should be less of an issue. Plus there has to be someone who wants to work on it and is willing to learn how.

The KDE version is a bit unique in the fact that it uses the default oxygen theme. Creating themes for KDE is a whole different beast and no one has done one in the Mint green colors.

Also keep in mind that appearance and theming is down to simply a matter of personal taste. No matter what choices are made some people will like it and some will probably hate it. The advantage is that it's really simple to get new themes and customize things to your liking.

Oh and yes, I created the new version of Mint-X as of Mint 17.

Well, it would be much appreciated if you could do that.

Again, the theme itself is quite nice. It's just the (highlight) colours I would like to be changed from green to a nice blue  .

Oh, and regarding the folder icons:

I am now fairly (even though not a 100%) sure that the Mint-X folder icons are simply elementary folder icons, but with green colour.

However, the folder icons in Linux Mint 17 Qiana still seem to be based on the old elementary 2.x icons.

There are new elemantary 3.x icons available now though, see:

http://elementaryos.org/journal/new-folder-icons-luna
http://elementaryos.org/journal/icons-3 ... sting-luna
http://danrabbit.deviantart.com/art/ele ... s-65437279
https://launchpad.net/elementaryicons

So, IMHO, it might be a good idea to update the Mint-X folder icons and base them on the new elementary 3.x folder icons  .

However, I personally think they should neither be green, nor blue.

Instead they should be made with a yellowish colour, like the Microsoft Windows 7 folder icons for example, see the following picture for example:

http://www.sevenforums.com/geek/gars/im ... Folder.png

That way there would only have to be one Mint-X icon theme, because the Mint-X icon theme with the yellowish folder icons could be used with both, the green variant of the Mint-X GTK+ theme, as well as with the blue variant of the Mint-X GTK+ theme, it would look good with both :) (as you said the green variant of the Mint-X GTK+ theme probably can not be dropped).

I think such yellowish folder icons would look better than green or blue folder icons anyway  .

So, if you could pull that off, that would be really nice  :) .

Looks like there is a deddicated tool available which can change the colours of the icons:

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ ... ent=124870
http://sourceforge.net/projects/icogen/

But I don't know if it's possible to get high quality results out of it.

PS:

Just a suggestion:

The blue colour:

#3399FF (R: 51 / G: 153 / B: 255)

is the default colour for selected items in Microsoft Windows 7 and looks quite nice as a highlight colour on themes with silver colour.

Hello,

I just came across this:

http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2014/08/mint-x-colors/

As long as the GTK+ theme highlight colour will also be changed, this would be nice :).
