System: Kernel: 4.8.0-53-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 Distro: Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya
Machine: HP EliteBook Folio 9470m
Graphics: Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1600x900@60.06hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ivybridge Mobile
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.0.7
I've followed instructions to the best of my ability and I can't see the new theme in the Appearance menu.

I downloaded Arc-Simple-Dark-10.zip from https://www.xfce-look.org/p/1194403/

Extracted and placed it in the themes directory.

So now I have this directory tree:
/home/folium/.local/share/themes/Arc-Simple-Dark-10/xfwm4/

Am I doing something wrong or is my system broke?

I'm really pleased with Linux Mint but it's stunning how difficult switching themes can be.

This works for me:
/usr/share/themes/Arc-Simple-Dark-10/

Use /usr/share/themes/Arc-Simple-Dark-10/ or /home/folium/.local/share/themes/Arc-Simple-Dark-10/

Hi dkrbnd.

For me, in the case of Arc-Simple-Dark-10, that is a Window Manager theme that can be set in Menu > Settings > Window Manager > Style tab

The stuff you can change in Menu > Settings > Appearance are GTK themes under the Style tab, and icon themes under the Icons tab.

Hope that helps.

The easiest thing to do is go here, download and install the ocs-url app:

https://www.opendesktop.org/p/1136805/

*Note: It's also available from Synaptic Package Manager - just search for ocs-url

Next time you go to xfce-look.org site you can just click on the 'install' option under the download tab. No need to faff about unzipping and copying files or anything like that ever again :D

I know this is an old thread, but something to try for 'Style' themes like Arc-Simple-Duck-10 is to download the zip (or tgz or whatever) package, them copy it into a hidden folder called .themes in your /home/user folder. If you look in your home folder and select 'show hidden files', and there is no folder called .themes just make one.
When you have copied the zipped file to /home/user(usually your name)/.themes extract it there.

Then check Settings > Appearance > Style. If your new theme is not there, check Settings > Window Manager > Style. The new theme will usually be in one of those.

Often this is simpler than messing around in root folders.
For Icon themes and stuff though, you might need one of the other methods.

I use /home/myusername/.themes to install themes manually.

I downloaded Oomox, and strongly recommend it! Very user friendly. :)

Something probably worth knowing.
If you have a lot of themes in the various '/themes/' folders, Settings > Appearance may seem to stall when you open it. It is sorting through the various folders where theme files can live and making sure it is up to date.
If you click on, for example, the 'Icons' tab and wait - once Appearance has updated its list, it will swap to Icons, and you'll know it is alive. Then you can click 'Style and should see any new theme(s) you have added.
There have been times I thought 'Appearance' was broken, and I closed and restarted it - but it was just taking some time indexing.
