No. I've seen this occur due to dodgy video cards and drivers. Please post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

I though it was firefox but nope happened last night. The system functions fine just the wallpaper disappears. Think it could be a unknown kernel bug.

Hi dave8671. I can't help with the direction in which catweazel was heading, but have something else worth checking.

Wherever it is that you chose your wallpaper (in Xfce it is Menu > Settings > Desktop) there might be a checkbox "Change the background" that when checked gives you a background slideshow. If yours is checked, then maybe your system is having trouble loading new images. Simply uncheck the box to keep a static image as the background and your issue should stop (though unresolved.)

try a different approach and test it out for a while. open your file manage to a folder you have wallpapers in, rightclick on one and set as background or wallpaper.

Its not just the wallpaper its the icons on the desktop that disappear. I caught that last night after I cleans the
.cache. I changed to one of the default wallpapers, but it happened with these as well I go to wallpaper in the system settings.

sounds like permissions again or your desktop needs to be re-installed. i have no experience with cinnamon do you have any output for find $HOME ! -user $USER -type f
hope you weren't running as root when trying to set wallpaper from file manager. i have wallpapers in my home folder

Output

Code: Select all

find: ‘/home/main/.cache/dconf’: Permission denied
I did a search this output is seems its a bug with update manager.

https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/issues/169

If I change the ownership to /home than if I use update manager that it will change back the ownership back to root?

Than if I use the command line apt upgrade would that not trigger this issue? I checked my .cache just now and its has me as the owner I think attached snapshot but I get the above result. As you can see the screen is black again. Logout and back in restores it. Does not effect my working on the laptop.

Question is would this fix it permanently

Code: Select all

find /home/$SUDO_USER ! -user $SUDO_USER -exec chown $SUDO_USER:$SUDO_USER '{}' \;

I got confused reading all the threads

this permission denied with .cache/dconf in cinnamon is not new. i have no experience with cinnamon but should be safe to delete everything in cache and reboot. i do this everyday to clear cache in xfce/mate (xfce complains about cache/sessions/xfce4-session-yourname:0) but if accidentally i delete it create a blank text and name it as such. usually you see this xfce error if you delete sessions folder in .xsession-errors at the very beginning

one thing you can try is delete the folder .cache entirely then create a new folder named .cache which should give you the correct permissions

whenever deleting anything .cache a reboot is needed or at the least loggoff

I deleted the .cache created a new new. On the first restart the wallpaper stayed but the icons vanished lol. I am on this laptop now and so far the desktop is intact. I am going to start updating the system updates using the upgrade command see if that stops this issue why not test.

The issue of tearing is easily fixed if you use the proprietary driver with an xorg.conf file.

Code: Select all

Option         "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x0; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1"
Option         "metamodes" ... { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }

I found this post about this bug below

viewtopic.php?t=228152&f=208#p1478409

On this thread cosmo had this command to fix this

Code: Select all

find /home/$SUDO_USER ! -user $SUDO_USER -exec chown $SUDO_USER:$SUDO_USER '{}' \;
I get a readout back stating

Code: Select all

find: ‘-exec’ is not the name of a known user
Are you aware of this thread?

I created the folder where you said it worked but I can not remove them from the desktop, I had to back to the folder I created them in.
