Desktop icon and background problems

Post by alangauld »

I've just upgraded from 17.3 to 18.3. All appears to be working well (including the Flatpacked
Gimp 2.10 - the reason for the upgrade) apart from:

When I use nemo as file manager I get a blank desktop (apart from the menu bar) but with
the correct background (plain solid colour). But the files in my Desktop folder do not show
up nor does Computer or Wastebasket etc.

When I run nautilus(*) the desktop contents appear but the background switches to the
black Mint screen and I can't change it.

How do I get my background and icons together? I'm stumped.

(*)This happens whether I run nautilus from the command line or by adding it to the
Startup Apps list.

OK, Looks like I got it working. I had to
- add nemo-desktop to my Startup Applications and
- install dcon-editor and
- using that set show icons to true.

now I get nemo and my background and my icons.

No idea why i can't change the background from nautilus
but I'm ok with nemo.

Just in case it helps anyone else...
