Used Oomox to make gtk's for existing themes, questions about how/if to post

Post by scoson » Sat Sep 01, 2018 10:31 pm

Hi, new to this forum. Been getting used to Mint Cinnamon for about 8 months now after being a Win user. I've always loved theming (not creating myself though) and after accumulating a fair number of themes for Mint, and then the subsequent update to 19 which broke some gtk/metacity elements, also the fact that some theme elements are by themselves, things become a little weird. I just started trying out Oomox a couple days ago (before I was a little afraid of it) but it's a pretty neat tool that even I can use! How do I to proceed after making some gtk's that work with Cinnamon themes that already exist? What I mean is, I don't really know who or how I'm supposed to credit somebody that originally created (did the real work) or if maybe I shouldn't even post? Also, if I did, should it be in a separate theme folder or with a different name or can I throw the original still working Cinnamon folder in what I made? So far I've done Eleganse-Dark, Eleganse-Orange, Eleganse-Teal, and almost finished on Crimson. Also thinking of seeing how it goes for a few killhellokitty themes after that for now. There's more questions I have for sure, but this for now. Hope I got my thoughts across ok. Thanks.

If you are using them for your own use you don't need to credit anyone and you can just mix and match themes with the Theme's app as you wish.

If you are intending to distribute them then you should really.

1) Apply and include a licence - GPLv3 is appropriate.
2) Credit the Oomox author and contributors (and arguably the source of oomox's templates - numix, materia or arc)
3) Credit the original author(s) of any theme elements not produced by oomox that you include.

If for example you are just 'inspired' by a theme colors and use the colours in oomox I don't think that merits a credit as such.

For packaging them for distribution if you are intending to host them on Cinnamon Spices so they can be downloaded via the Themes app see the readme at the bottom of https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon-spices-themes

If you are going to put them on OpenDesktop.org you generally just zip up the whole theme folder as it would sit in ~/.themes/ and upload the zip.

@smurphos , first off I gotta say I was hoping you'd jump in here (been lurking since I started with the Mint). I've got 5 of your Cinnamox's, Rhino I use the most. I usually gravitate toward darker. I've got more questions but I need coffee!

No worries - I like to see people experimenting with theming and Cinnamon Spices needs some more options with good GTK support as-well. Cinnamox-Rhino is my go to as-well :)

Ok.. I think putting them on opendesktop.org in gtk category is the way to go, if I do anything. The rest is over my head and I still have questions. I'm already registered there but I've only posted a few thanks for themes. I found links to the aforementioned themes so I could add those to a post. Wondering, for the name, should I keep the oomox on there or does it matter? I noticed that Oomox itself just inserts that into the name without choice but I realized I could just change it to whatever in the index.theme file and then the folder. What would be a good way to name for this purpose, e.g. Eleganse-Orange-Inspired? Another thing I'm wondering right now is if there's anyway I can load an Oomox creation (actual theme) back in Oomox if I've deleted the config on the left pane in the app? I kind of regret doing that. Probably not?

Hmm, now that I see it like that I'm not happy about that (unfocused border?) color is a little too dark and I didn't even know that would happen. I've just been eyeballin colors, I don't really know how to pick out and decipher the important colors in css files, if that's how you're supposed to do it. Besides that, I have no idea what primary caret color, secondary caret color, and caret aspect ratio do. You're outta your league Donnie!!

Looking good. I like the borders. I wouldn't keep the Oomox in the name personally.

No way to get the Oomox config back, unless you keep snapshots of your home folder. They are stored in an .Oomox folder. But you could check out the theme CSS produced. There is a section in the GTK theme with all the colour definitions in one place, so not too hard to reverse engineer the Oomox profile.

Thanks for the kindness.. Thanks for the advice on looking in the gtk css, maybe I can figure it out some things there. I edited my other post before I saw your reply. The previous post I was saying I didn't really know how to pick out/decipher the important colors from the Cinnamon panel css. I open that up and it just looks like a nightmare

6 done.. Again I have to point out that I didn't create the Cinnamon panels, only gtk's and metacity. I LOVE MINT CINNAMON!
