General Compiz decorations and Firefox theme questions

Hey everyone, while on Windows, Firefox was my main browser. Now that I've semi-migrated to Mint, I find myself using Firefox less and less in favor of Chrome. I was wondering how to make Firefox look like the Windows version, with the default Windows icon set and font, make the Firefox button orange and the rest of the window in tones of blueish and remove the titlebar while still retaining the close, minimize and maximize controls.

Also, if I right click the arrow on the top left of a window, the title bar disappears. What could be causing this?

Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers

Unfortunately I don't think there's any way you can make Firefox on Linux look like it does on Windows. As far as I know, Firefox on Linux is written to use GTK for its controls (radio and check buttons, buttons, scroll bars, input boxes and the like), and the window frame is dependent on whatever window manager you're using (metacity, compiz, emerald, or others). The icon theme it uses is the same as the icon theme set for the rest of the system. Unless Mozilla rewrites Firefox to use a completely customized window, rather than depending on the OS to do most of the work, there's no way to make it look exactly like it does in Windows.

As far as Compiz goes, if you're running Mint 11, unless you've downgraded Compiz you're running a buggy version that experiences such problems as what you've mentioned. If you're bent on keeping Compiz installed and using it and want it to work, I'd recommend downgrading it using instructions found here.

Okay, thank you for the answer. I'll stick with Chrome for now, then, which does have an option of not using the GTK theme.

Regarding downgrading Compiz, what negative consequences would it bring? I can't even use Emerald themes in the current state, the decorations simply disappear too.

There are only two potential downsides to downgrading that I'm aware of.

One: If you use Unity (who does, though, really?) you can't downgrade because Unity is dependent on the 0.9.x versions of Compiz. If you downgrade, you'll lose Unity.

Two: The Grid plugin in 0.8.6 doesn't have the fancy Aero Snap-like features that 0.9.x's Grid plugin has. If you like those or use them a lot, you might not want to downgrade.

On the other hand, upsides include no bugs, Emerald should work just fine, and... well, yeah, no bugs really covers most of it.

Okay, I did all that is described in that article, and Compiz is working pretty smoothly now. I'll miss the Aero Snap feature, but that's life ;)
I have one problem, though. I can't seem to launch the Compiz Fusion Icon. Do I have to reinstall something?

I'm not entirely sure about that, I believe the version of Fusion Icon in the main repos isn't compatible with the older version of Compiz, and there isn't a version included in the downgrade PPA, so I think you're out of luck. I never used Fusion Icon myself, so it wasn't a concern for me.

What are the terminal commands to do what the Fusion icon does? Like reloading the window manager, switching between metacity and compiz, switching between gtk and emerald, etc.?

Hi I cant help with the compiz issues as I'm on mint 10 and it all works fine for me :)
You can change Firefox themes tho, if you search "linux theme" in FF add-ons you may find something that you like.

I hope that helps you.

To switch to Compiz, or to reload it if it's already running, use 'compiz --replace' (This will reload Compiz entirely)
To switch to Metacity, or to reload it, use 'metacity --replace'
To switch to Emerald, or to reload it, use 'emerald --replace' (only works while Compiz is running, will only reload Emerald)
To switch back to GTK (Metacity) from Emerald, or to reload it if not using Emerald, use 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' (only works while Compiz is running, will only reload GWD)
