apt wants to remove too much including the desktop

Post by bash64 » Fri Mar 15, 2019 7:50 pm

I want to uninstall a package from mint 19. However apt wants to uninstall cinnamon and ten other apps also, for no apparent reason. I have known about this bug for a while but now i need to get rid of a particular package. Period. Anyone found a solution for this yet?

Code: Select all

sudo apt remove libimobiledevice6

The following packages will be REMOVED:
cinnamon cinnamon-dbg cinnamon-session clementine deluge deluge-gtk
gnome-power-manager gnome-session-bin gtkpod gvfs-backends ideviceinstaller
ifuse libatomicparsley0 libgpod-common libgpod4 libgtkpod1
libimobiledevice-utils libimobiledevice6 mint-meta-cinnamon
rhythmbox-plugins upower usbmuxd

There is no bug, this is by design. When you remove packages on which other packages depend, those packages get removed as well, because they wouldn't work without.

Solution: Don't remove the package...

Bear in mind Ubuntu's Bionic version is newer that the latest official release on github, although not newer than the current master,

The Bionic version is based on a snapshot from this point - https://github.com/libimobiledevice/lib ... 4b76fd3e12

I don't have any apple devices so can't assist you but have you tried asking for help on the forum to get it working with the supplied version. Bionics version should support IOS 11 according to the changelog.
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

i know that installing "pcloud" to your linux system will allow iphones to transfer pics and music back and forth to your linux mint as i have done this for other folks, i would figure that this should also work for ipod as well if you are able to download pcloud to your ipod using their store to find it as it is found also in the iphone repositories...here is the link to install it by .deb to your LM...DAMIEN

ps...trying to remove the libimobiledevice6 from your computer OS WILL bork it as gm10 has already told you...it is a shared library file for all the other features in LM that it will remove along with that library file.

they wouldn't be personal anymore.
the cloud is a lie.

no one says to 'store' anything there...the purpose of me telling you this is so you can 'transfer' photos or music or files from one device to the other and then just delete what is in pcloud immediately after you have things transferred...no need to store anything there, just use it to transfer is all...i do not use cloud storage at all but do not see the harm in using it as a transfer point, especially when you have an Apple product that does not play well with linux products...this is your viable, easy solution...DAMIEN

People who are opposed to using the cloud might still object to that, as there is no guarantee that those files will actually be deleted.

Do not know if it will work on an ipod, but would "dukto" be a solution ?

https://www.macworld.co.uk/download/net ... 6-3328925/

I use it to transfer stuff between linux /windows systems and my parent's ipad.
