ibm450,
I had that problem a while back and I couldn't find a way to fix it.
Instead I removed the bottom panel and installed AWN dock, using that for the launchers I felt I had to have handy.
I moved on to the top panel and removed everything except a shut down button and a menu icon.
Then I right-clicked on the panel, chose properties and sent it transparent.
Screenshots of my current desktop are posted in this thread already, dated 16th April 2010, on page 103,so you can see what my workaround solution looks like.

This seems dependent on the GTK theme you are using. I have had some themes with and without this effect. Never have found a way around it other than finding a theme that will not give this effect. If I remember correctly. It has been awhile since I have made my panel transparent. :)

Nice feed3, you are right the system monitor in KDE4 covers all the info you would normally want to monitor. Thanks for the kind words. I try to incorporate the dock in the theme as best I can, it ties the theme together that way.

Wicked desktop shot. Is that 2 different AWN bars running? The top corner long bar then a corner round one running just the clock?

Just upgraded to AWN 4 from 3.2 ... friggin amazing. Working on mine some today. I'll post a new shot tonight maybe.

mmesantos, if you don't mind me asking, where in VA btw?

Thank you SeanBest. It is one AWN, Choose edgy then slide the position bar all they way over to the edge and it will give this look. :)
