I did not find any advanced tutorials when I searched last weekend.

I found this reference is essential:
http://conky.sourceforge.net/docs.html
I download a script that looked good, and then go through it line by line, checking the syntax of each command in the documentation above. By the time I had finished this, I knew enough to write my own scripts.

HERE is an example of some more rings in conky. It is not a tutorial, but there are two versions of the conky script. You could compare them to get some ideas about modifying the script to suit yourself.

EDIT: I just checked my gnote files and found a lot of links to various conky sites and forum posts. See if any of them help

Standard Linux Mint 11 with modified bottom bar, AWN, and Dolphin the Wii emulator running Mario Kart. Mario Kart runs perfectly by the way. I've also edited some of the Launcher icons.

That would help him on the Conky side of things...

I'm not expert on LUA myself but I know enough through tinkering around making small programs for my own use in other languages to figure out how to modify things. Sometimes cut and paste isn't a bad thing, but if you want more info on LUA I'd suggest reading over this http://lua-users.org/wiki/LearningLua and checking out some of the links they provide. The best teacher though will be experience, take and existing LUA script for conky and a conky RC file and experiment a bit instead of copy paste maually copy things over it will get you familiar with the structure used. Make minor changes say to colors or to other variables and then load that conky up and see how the changes take effect. You can always use "Undo" if a edit prevents Conky from loading.

Something that I've been working on for my educational purposes. I'm still a newbie even after being a Linux user for over 4 years now. This is on a Compaq Presario 1670 laptop, factory specs max the ram out at 192 mb, it has a 4 gb hd, cd drive and pcmia card slot for networking. None of my Linux Mint disc would load. The base was installed using a Debian 6 netinstall disc because of the conflict with the kernel. I originally wanted to have an Xfce desktop, I did have a LXDE desktop but decided to learn more about a different environment.

So here is what I'm calling Minted Debian e16 also included is a picture of the synaptic showing the linux-image I have to use on this antiquated piece of equipment. I'm using the chrome theme.

For what I intend on using it for, it has adequate speed. Being old enough that it isn't worth stealing from my truck, and if it is stolen aggravating enough to non-linux users to make them wish they hadn't stole it.

After 4+ years of Linux I am still a newbie.
Running Linux Mint 10 main edition on 3 recycled desktops and Linux Mint 9 Xfce on 2 laptops.

I've found also if you take a existing LUA script that is already running, you can open the LUA files, make small changes and save as you make a change you can monitor your changes as you make them. Makes it a little easier, at lest for me to get an understanding of the script.

Never have seen LUA script before this is my first atempt, it took about an hour.

Just reinstated my original conky theme, I figure I'll use it as a base and modify it, slowly adding more and more lua to it. It'll be project epsilon.

I also made a launcher that runs a command to restart conky, makes it quicker to work b/c I just press the button after saving my changes and I can see what I did.

A new setup to mark my complete transition from Ubuntu (and its derivatives) to Linux Mint Xfce. I'm not too thrilled with the direction Ubuntu or GNOME are going in, so it's time to diverge.

Note from the Forum Staff:

Please continue to use clickable-thumbnails linking to the larger image -- to help those with slower connections.

An example of the BBC code needed is below. Most image hosting sites will automatically generate 'clickable-thumbnails' for you, as well.

Code: Select all

My current desktop . . . Mint-9 Fluxbox LTS Edition.

The Fluxbox window manager, with the tint2 panel and a simple Conky.
I am really having fun using Mint-9 (fast and stable).

Someone posted the link to this wallpaper either here or in DevianART.

I use Imagebam.com for my clickable-thumbnails. There are many Image Hosting sites available.
