I followed this tutorial over at OMG!Ubuntu,

just follow step 4 if you already have AWN testing version running, also make sure compiz is enabled and AWN is set to startup after login.

I think Ubuntu Tweak is also able to do this, haven't looked yet. But the method in the tutorial is easy enough.

thx for the tip, but the word tutorial put me off ;) i was actually just curious...i usually remove the panel by going to usr/bin/ and deleting it (that is from booting basically) :D

if you look at my latest setup you'll see that i've done all of that already ;) [http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 20#p462272]

Mint Katya with KDE plasma running on top of it(tried it, loved it, swapping to LMDE when the KDE version drops...).

couple minor tweaks, AWN, etc.

i really like that idea! that's why i gave it a shot as well and i gotta say, it runs fast under KDE, i really like it!

So here's my LinuxMint 11 Katya with KDE plasma running (just tweaked it a little, using 4 individual workspaces):

very nice. i notice that AWN is a massively popular option with linux users. guess it's one of the things that apple got right, innit?

the shell is extremely responsive thanks to how it runs, which accounts for the speed... i've got to say i'm sold on the shell concept(though not on gnome's shell... they're doing something weird over there...).

i like the four backgrounds.

AWN is awesome, indeed. especially lucido! However, i wouldn't use it in KDE, somehow it doesn't appeal to me there. I'm a huge fan of the KDE panel...the only thing that could need some improvements is smooth tasks imo. The option to pin applications doesn't work for me and i'd really like to be able to use that feature so that i can forget about a second applications only panel (using quick launch). On the other hand, the applications only panel is basically like a dock so it's not too problematic. In gnome, i only use AWN without a panel and i love it that way...

As for the for backgrounds...doable in gnome but again, somehow in KDE it works without a hassle, just a few clicks, done.

Here is my compaq nx9105's Mint 9 LXDE desktop

The background is called Forest Camo by *TheAL, to which I added the Mint logo.

While technically I shouldn't have modified his work, I am only using it personally and not redistributing it to anyone else. If you like the background please download and use *TheAL's original which is available as a zip file containing monitor, netbook and mobile screen resolutions.

My LXDE install is fairly standard. I have added the nvidia-96 drivers for the GPU, hplip for my networked printer and LibreOffice 3.4. It runs really well on this old hardware :D
