Solarized Theme - improved

Post by aglotus »

-Have installed an improved :) Solarized (dark) theme on Linux Mint 17.3 MATE .
It is now properly dark (eg. the left menu-side-panels are now also dark -
not grey - to match the rest of the theme etc).

-The Numix Circle (flat) icons complement this theme perfectly.

Image

Quick install how-to:
-Theme --> Solarized (dark): Unzipped the ttps://github.com/corebob/numix-solarized/archive/v0.2.zip into /usr/share/themes

-Icons --> Numix Circle: https://github.com/numixproject/numix-icon-theme-circle
use apt-get (Linux Mint):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:numix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install numix-icon-theme-circle
OR just put the icons folders like so:
/usr/share/icons/Numix-Circle
[apt-get also installs /usr/share/icons/Numix-Circle-Light - only used
the first one - ie. the Numix-Circle)].

-For a system-wide theme use ****sudo**** ie with the elevated privilages launch Mint's
Control Centre > Appearance (the new solarized dark theme and the icons are visible there - so set the new theme/icons).

-Would probably also work with putting the theme folder in ~/.themes and the icons folder in ~/.icons -
but I haven't tried this second way - your input very welcome here.

-At this point Linux Mint's MENU background was still grey and not themed. To fix this:
Right click Start > Preferences > Theme . Here, UNCHECK 'Use custom colors' and make sure the theme selected is our Numix Solarized.

-As my own preference I have set Caja to the 'list view' as default.

-Enjoy!

Re: Solarized Theme - needs murrine-engine installed

Post by aglotus »

Need the murrine-engine installed (a dependency) - many people already have this, so
the revised install now is:

Quick install how-to:
-[Optionally] install the Murrine Engine:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine gtk2-engines-pixbuf

-Theme --> Solarized (dark): Unzipped the https://github.com/corebob/numix-solari ... e/v0.2.zip into /usr/share/themes

-Icons --> Numix Circle: https://github.com/numixproject/numix-icon-theme-circle

The rest as in the above howto.

Add custom styles to Pluma or Gedit - eg Solarized dark

Post by aglotus »

How to add your own custom schemes/styles to Pluma 1.12 (present in eg Linux Mint 17.3 MATE).
[Should also work on Gedit?].

1. Visit https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GtkSour ... yleSchemes
Download scheme/style .xml file of your choice from the selection available there.

Since my desktop has the Solarized schemes/styles this example will solarize Pluma
(both light and dark themes/styles).
A Solarized dark Pluma is shown below:

Image

and a Solarized light Pluma, again below:
[ with a Solarized dark GVim ]

Image

***Solarized light scheme/style***
Near the bottom of the https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GtkSour ... yleSchemes page see section:
'Solarized Light
A light theme with pastel colors, very easy on the eyes. Screenshot | Download'

-Download the 'solarized_light.xml' .

2.Open your pluma/gedit text editor

3.Go to Edit > Preference > Font & Colors

4.Click the 'Add...' button to install scheme/style - find your style .xml file's download location,
add style and there you go.
[So it matters little where your aditional styles .xml files are stored. Some sane locations could be:
/home/username/.config/pluma/styles/solarized_light.xml (create the 'styles' dir if required)
OR for system-wide: /usr/share/gtksourceview-3.0/styles/solarized_light.xml
(other out of the box Pluma styles already reside here)].

***Solarized dark scheme/style***
The solarised dark .xml is NOT present on the above download page.
But we can easily edit solarized_light.xml to give us the dark scheme
by (in essence) inverting background and foreground colors.
The Solarized palettes/design makes colorscheme inversion trivial,
see:
http://ethanschoonover.com/solarized#features

1.Edit the 'solarized_light.xml' making one change below:
Under 'Global settings' COMMENT OUT one line:
<style name="text" foreground="base01" background="base3"/>

and insert this line instead:
<style name="text" foreground="base0" background="base03"/>

2.Save the file as solarized_dark.xml

3.Add to Pluma, as was done for the solarized_light.xml above .

4. Enjoy!!!
