Still running Manjaro, so far liking the OS. Running minimalist conky, made some changes to it.

Original Conky here: https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1210298

While we still have Conkies. I found out Mint 20.2 can still happily run a Conky over the Video Wallpaper.

(I couldn't find a way to whack it in an iFrame, so it's in the Youtube at link below)

Wow - video wall, Compiz? with wobbly windows, snazzy dock animations and I think i spotted desktop cube.

Your CPU looks to be grumbling at all that work just for a desktop though...

It is only an i5,and pretty old. But it handles everything well. The only annoyance is that these days playing long or hi-res videos, there are occasional audio hiccups.
That only seems to be happening since I switched to an SSD though, so there may be something odd in the way it 'does stuff.'
When those processor bars swing around it is usually doing intensive stuff like opening or closing a program.
While that screen capture was being recorded, the i5 was playing a video on SMplayer, running the video wallpaper at the same time, and using ffmpeg to do the actual capture and encode to mp4, as well as opening Libre and Calligra.

So I'm not too disappointed. You might notice that things like my File managers and some of my other apps have transparent panels in them, so that is all overhead for an intel chip. Plus, I have 6 virtual desktops running, each with its own wallpaper - underneath that video.

Overall, I'm still pretty impressed with Mint Xfce - especially with all my Plasma toys embedded. :D

Everything will be fine until he wants to play a game for example. He will get like -25FPS... :P

Agreed !!
I've never been a gamer, except for Doom in the early days on MS Dos at first, Zork (text mode only, and on something like a Commodore 64 initially) and Flight Simulators, when I was convincing flying school customers that by the year 2000 we would have computers powerful enough, and suitable software and peripherals - to use them for actual training.

The big Red X seen on the side Panels and on Cairo Dock give a 1-click Kill switch for the Video background. Some of the Icons on the Panels give 1-click ON switch for Video Wallpaper. So it is more or less a one click affair either way.

For day to day use, there's not a lot of drain. Of course, I think I mentioned that the video is showing the load of the CPU playing the wallpaper AND Encoding the video at the same time, while also playing a video on another desktop in Celluloid or SMplayer.

I still think it is pretty neat that Mint allows this much load to run fairly smoothly on something more or less equivalent of a Celeron system.. With Integrated Graphics rather than a separate card.

@rossdv8

Actually your configuration isn't bad. Look at my potato specs. i5 isn't much better than Celeron? It is better. The bottleneck here may be GPU which is probably some integrated Intel HD Graphics of 'whatever' Gen. And most of integrated GPUs are so wretched that basically CPU is doing GPUs job and shared memory is making GPU performance unstable. It's like two dogs fighting over a one rag. But Intel HD is still better than Intel GMA which barely handles any 3D acceleration... Unless you want to play games from 2002 at playable framerate. Vulkan support on GMA? Fuggedaboutit!

Yeah, it's really nice and clean, but... I have like 'postage stamp' resolution and I thought my desktop feels empty, so I learend this conky noodling and you have like freaking Imax screen for your desktop and like 5 icons.

What's going on in here?

Speaking for myself, I hate a cluttered desktop and if it is cluttered I can't find what I'm looking for so end up using the system menu anyway. It's an age thing I think - being able to remember what icon to look for and where about it is. I end up using search on the iPad, because the apps even change their icons!

What's the point of a desktop if not to get something actually useful done? I want nice crisp font rendering in my WP, high resolution in my graphics apps. And when they're not open for some reason, something pleasant to see like a painting on the wall.
