Need help increasing gaming performance with HD7850

Postby Joonas » Thu Apr 20, 2017 7:04 pm

Hi! I've installed csgo and league of legends(I used a really nice tutorial from reddit). The fps is half from what it was on my windows 7  .. League of legends dropped from 100-140 in windows 7 to 20-60 in mint cinnamon  .. Csgo has awfull stutters and I get around 20-100 fps. (Windows 7 : 100-200fps online). AMD doesn't deliver proprietary drivers for mint 18 so I'm using open source MESA drivers (I guess :| ). I've googled 2 days now for help and I didn't find a similiar thread as mine is :? Thank you all in advance..

Just recently another member was having troubles with slow gameplay. I suggested to him that the Cinnamon desktop itself was using up all of his video memory, and asked him to try either the MATE or Xfce editions.

He is now a very happy gamer running Mint 18.1 Xfce edition . . :)

So.. Changing the desktop made no difference. I'm guessing the open source drivers doesnt work well with gaming etc.. :? Mint 18 doesn't unleash the the true powers of GPU i'm using. I guess Ill try mint 17.3 because if I'm right the proprietary drivers worked on that version. Such a bummer

EDIT: AMD doesn't unleash the true powers of my gpu in mint 18. It's a real bummer.

I am writing to inform you that the state of playing League on Linux as of March 2016 is almost entirely comparable to Windows. You can expect identical FPS on both platforms. Here is how you achieve it.
..
Note 2: Full system specs disclosure: I'm using an AMD HD 7950 and an AMD FX-6300. All details are maxed out and am getting a stable 144 FPS.
..
I am using latest AMD driver: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/linux

Not Mint per say, but AMD ! AMD has dropped driver support for ALL linux systems . . I suggest you send them an email with your complaint.

They are working on open-source drivers now, but I don't know when it will be stable and/or available.

Vega is due out Q2 this year. So that video card launch will happen by the end of June. I would hope they have atleast a modest driver done. Otherwise, sales to linux users will be non existant. This includes folding farms who are were linux users until the driver issue.

So! I downgraded to mint 17.3 and installed proprietary drivers and ran csgo. 50-80 fps but mostly 50-60.. Id say the open source ran better.. Same goes with league of legends.. 1 odd thing I found that browsing the internrt with proprietary drivers (mozilla and chrome) was smooth! No screen tearing! But playing youtube videos with 1080 60fps did not work and the 1080 30p had issues too. I had no problems with youtube videos on open source drivers..
I guess ill upgrade back to Mint 18 and keep the dual boot for now.. :D

I also have a HD7850. I was able to find a fix for screen the screen tearing issue on video playback.

Make a file: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf
Insert the text:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Radeon"
   Driver "radeon"
   Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"
        Option "TearFree" "on"
EndSection

Then I think I removed the file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf
Then reboot.

These commands should accomplish it:

Code: Select all

echo -e ‘Section “Device” Identifier “Radeon” Driver “radeon” Option “AccelMethod” “glamor” Option “TearFree” “on” EndSection’ | sudo tee /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf
sudo rm /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf
sudo reboot

Try it at your own risk. This worked for me, but when I look at my files now, I seem to still have the 10-amdgpu.conf file.

How is the performance with the HD 7850? I have an HD 7790 and the performance is miserable to the point that it's almost the same as an HD 7450. I tried the amdgpu-pro driver, but it was too buggy.
