Re: Problems with NMS (on Lutris)

Some help, please .........
I have some difficulties

- I don't have this game, but main support is on https://lutris.net/games/no-mans-sky/
There you can read
The game runs in offline mode only, nothing happens when I try to (re)connect to the internet.

Game is starting but it craches during loading with message "The game has encountered an error and will shutdown"
So it can be assumed that the game works without internet .
But it is unknown how he installed it. ( Steam or Wine-gog )

- I don't know how you installed ( wine - gog or Steam installer )

- About error, check this https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/issues/597
But this error is quite old. So the bug should be fixed in the Lutrus script for "NMS".

Edit
- Check also https://www.winehq.org/search?q=No+mans+sky
However this is from "wine".

Edit
I seen also tha sometimes working sometimes not working on https://www.protondb.com/app/275850
Distro:Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS / 2 weeks ago
Mutliplayer on Proton 5.x and 6.x needs a winetricks workaround, or revert to 4.x
The following command did not work with some older versions of Wine, I used 6.16

Code: Select all

WINEPREFIX=/PATHTO/steam/steamapps/compatdata/275850/pfx/ winetricks win7
If this does not work, run the same command but remove “win7” and see if the winetricks window pops up, if it doesn’t you may need to try with a different version of wine or winetricks.
So if you have game on Steam, you can try run game on Steam with Proton on Linux without Lutris.
And he writes that the multiplayer doesn't work.

I have installed Steam from Synaptic package manager inside Linux Mint.
You need enable Proton, example how to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kY1EP_7wcbc
Install game.
Try run game, maybe will work.

I've tried a different version of the game (Frontier instead of Origin) and : the game start, with sound but with no graphics. I must stop the process.

New problem = new topic
is not so correct, is better to speak about same problems with different applications (via Lutris, twice are GOG versions)

Libgamemode.so is part of libgamemode :
cerbero@cerbero-MS-7B48:~$ aptitude search libgamemode
p libgamemode-dev - Optimise Linux system performance on deman
i A libgamemode0 - Optimise Linux system performance on deman
p libgamemodeauto-dev - Automatically optimise system performance
i libgamemodeauto0 - Optimise Linux system performance on deman
i libgamemodeauto0:i386 - Optimise Linux system performance on deman

cerbero@cerbero-MS-7B48:~$ dpkg -l | grep libgamemode

I've done some tests and I think is not a System problem or a Lutris problem, but is Wine envolved.
Any suggestions about winecfg/winetricks/wine dependencies?!?
Somethink to check for?
Thanks.

Re: Problems with NMS (on Lutris)

Post by 1000 »

From your errors I don't see
- which game is from gog installer
- which version wine you have
- I don't know if you use Lutris or not

Lutris installer installs dependencies automatically when you installed game with Lutris
When I have in system wine 5.0 ,
ii wine64 5.0-3ubuntu1 amd64 ... API implementation - 64-bit binary loader
my Lutris have 5.7
/home/x/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/lutris-5.7-11-x86_64/bin/wine

Wine itself cannot download dependencies. Configuration can be heavy. ( trial and error method )
Ubuntu repository use old wine version in own repository.
But on website winehq also are repository with packages, also for Linux Mint.
https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

Winehq has a user-created test database.
For example for " No Man's Sky "
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=34056
There from test report you can read how or if game working, what game need if user know.

And there you can also seen that winehq have own bugzilla where you can report a bug, problem with wine.
https://bugs.winehq.org/buglist.cgi?com ... lution=---

Ubuntu have also older winetrics for dependencies.
And winehq have newer winetrics for dependencies
https://wiki.winehq.org/Winetricks

Example tutorial from internet https://itsfoss.com/use-windows-applications-linux/

I don't remember I can be wrong. When you open winecfg app, there you can easily install the applications, but not always asking for dependencies.
Dependencies can be installed with wintricks --> "install win... library "
Some dependencies may not work together.

Instead Wine from terminal, you can also test wine from PlayOnLinux.

Edit
I know from experience that messing with the settings can sometimes damage Wine.
You can remove local files of Wine ( for example ~/.wine. )
All installed dependencies for .exe files will be removed as well.
Wine will create new default settings.
Each version of Wine can use its own localization or a common one.
https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#Wineprefixes

In the case of Lutris, when game was installed from button, and you will remove wineprefix path, you also lose dependencies,
so probably you need reinstall game.

From your errors I don't see
- which game is from gog installer
- which version wine you have
- I don't know if you use Lutris or not
Lutris : 0.5.8.4-202107241529~ubuntu20.04.1 focal
Wine : 5.0-3ubuntu1 focal
WineHQ : 6.17~focal-2 focal

On Lutris I use WineHQ, but I have the same error using Lutris or launching programs via terminal.
NMS and Osiris New Down crash at start.
A card game like Burraco Master (with few graphical requests) function for a wile, then crash.
And I have no error messages about DLL or anything else missing or broken; is this that make me crazy!

I'll try to find something on Appdb, Bugs or Wiki .................

Games are functioning for a wile (for example with No Man's Sky I've plaied for about 200 hours).
Then somethinks goes wrong.
I try everything, including reinstall all the system, but with no results.
Last but not least, I've purged every *wine* on the system and reinstall from scratch (wine-staging, winehq-staging, winetricks, dependencies, libraries, ...)
Nothing change.
With Lutris, Burraco Master is functioning, but at the end, when the game is win or lost, game crash ..........................

When you will report a bug, try to describe everything exactly how you run the game.
You can even make a video and show own options.
Even show logs when you run the game with gamemode and log without running gamemode.

Is there any free game that also doesn't work for you?

BurracoMaster is free for offline use only (that is what I do).
Can you suggest me a free windows game to use to make a test?
Thanks

I have not exactly a bug to report about, programs are crashing without clear error messages ............... maybe there is some kind of dependencies missing, but I'm not able to understand what ......

I'm still there .... on Web I find this page : https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50859#c11
They write
A user on the forums reports 'export MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.5' as a workaround.
At the moment I change nothing, because I don't know the default value of MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE if I will decide to restore it.
What do you think about?

I just got No Man's Sky running on Linux Mint 20.2

I have an NVidia card, so I installed the drivers for that through LM's driver manager.

I installed Steam through software manager, not the flatpak version, this is crucial.
It doesn't work with the flatpak version of steam, nor is it needed because Steam will update itself.
Then I activated Steam Play for all programs inside steam.
Installed No Man's Sky. Steam installed some stuff in the background.

And it just works.
