GPU MHz drops to 200mhz for 3 seconds when gaming

Post by mksh21 »

Hi, I have a laptop hp e15s with Ryzen 5 5625U and 16gb ram. I have noticed that in games, once a minute, my gpu mhz drops down to 200mhz, as well as vram drops to 6mhz and my framerates drops to 2-5 fps.No matter what game I run and with which Wine prefix, I get the same results. I tried with Steam proton,Lutris and PortProton, they all give the same result. My temps are fine, around 55-60c in load. Any information you need, I will be happy to provide.

Just taking a quick look there I see you are using what appears to be a non-standard Mint kernel (6.1.7-x64v1-xanmod1 x86_64) and a bunch of other stuff below with 'focal' and 'jammy' mixed with Wine etc. you also seem to have a boatload of repos active and I even see some 'bionic' stuff which is even older. 'jammy' is basically what Mint 21 is based on.

honestly, I would just wipe your drive and start clean just to see if that issue is still there on more standard use stuff. just stick with the standard 5.15 kernel unless you actually need to shift to something newer. even if you do need a newer kernel, Mint's 'Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels' section offers 5.19 kernel (supported until Aug 2023) which looks like it's from July/Aug 2022 (if you need something even newer you can do 'sudo apt install linux-oem-22.04c' which gives you the 6.1.0 kernel as I think this is the newest available on Mint using more official stuff). then try Lutris etc. on Mint 21 I just use https://github.com/lutris/lutris/releases to install Lutris from the .deb file as that's even what the main Lutris site suggests for Ubuntu based OS's, which Mint is based on.

the only repos I got on my system are...

Code: Select all

Repos:

so as you can see when it comes to Wine (on Mint 21.x series) there is only 'jammy' there.

if anyone else has any tips feel free to chime in.

p.s. all of the games I play I do so offline through Lutris and GloriousEggroll runner for Lutris ( https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine ... m/releases ) combo paired with the 'development' version of Wine from winehq website which is currently v8.0-rc5 (you can probably stick to the 'stable' version if you prefer that which I think is v7.0.1 the last I checked). then just load up the games main exe file through Lutris and play. I got a i5-3550 with a 1050 Ti 4GB GPU using the 'recommended' NVIDIA driver v525.xx. I am using the standard Mint kernel, which is 5.15.

Thank you for the reply. I will try out other kernels. The reason why I have so much stuff is that I play games specifically through PortProton, mainly since it generally gives me higher fps (even with the sudden 200mhz drop) and I have watched certain Linux mint gaming optimizations which are no older than 3 months and literally all of them, recommended install almost everything xD as a last resort, I will just wipe the system clean. Thank you for tuning in.

Quick update : Having the oem 6.10 kernel helped me get rid of the sudden gpu mhz drop but now I noticed that the whole system stutters when in game, even though the frametimes are ok and my cpu and gpu usage dont go higher than 80-85%

What kind of fps differences are we talking roughly?

because if it's negligible real world differences, say a few fps or so, then it's not worth risking screwing up your system because of it, especially if your frame rates are already rather high (anything around 60fps is quite smooth) to begin with.

p.s. because in general '30fps is playable, 60fps+ is optimal' as this has been standard for decades now. I would say mid-to-high 20's is a realistic bare minimum for a playable game as going into the low 20's a games playability will take a solid hit quickly, especially if it's not brief and is steadily in the low 20's or lower.

Recently I was playing a game with some what I think is called 'micro stutter' but I fixed it by 'V-SYNC = off'. not sure if that will help your situation though.

In Lutris I would generally get 25-35 fps with gpu and cpu usage going to 95% but if I launch the games through PortProton, I would get around 40-50 fps on a constant basis and the framtimes would stay around 20-25ms.

Ahh, I see. that's a worthwhile difference.

did you ever try that GloriousEggroll runner in Lutris? because that got at least three games working that don't work on standard Wine for me and things work well (about how I would expect them to). it's using Proton to which I imagine helps.

as a bonus with that GE runner (if you want more frame rate without sacrificing graphics much)... you can force FSR 1.0 in games that don't normally have FSR support. for example on my 1080p monitor I am forcing 1477x831 res in a couple of games I play (normally that resolution is not selectable in the game) and then is automatically upscaled to my monitors native 1080p. I used a 1.3x formula (i.e. 1920/1.3 = 1476.923076923 ; 1080/1.3 = 830.769230769. hence, when you round it, it's 1477x831). but you got to tweak things to get this working as it won't do this by default. I heard this was mostly beneficial for people with high res monitors like 1440p(2k) or 2160p(4k) though but it does give me a decent performance boost without much hit to visuals. but to use that I think one has to use 'fullscreen = on' (in the game itself) otherwise it won't work. but if you have a 1440p monitor (or higher) I would be curious to see what you think of this feature as using that same 1.3x formula for 1440p (2560x1440) would be 1969x1108. so it's like your GPU would be similar to 1080p performance but at 1440p visuals is the general idea (assuming you got a 1440p monitor). but this is done in Lutris (and assuming you are using that GloriousEggroll runner as it's a feature of this)... right click game shortcut, select 'Configure > System options' then on 'environment variables' for 'Key' you put in "WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_CUSTOM_MODE" (without the ") and for 'Value' you put in for example "1477x831 %command%" (without the ") and add it then save. then when you start up your game, go to it's graphics settings and that 1477x831 resolution will be selectable now. you can use other formula's to like 1.5x or 2.0x, but that basically won't work on 1080p since it seems many games (at least semi-recent ones) will only allow the resolution to go so low before it will be rejected (like 1080p using 2.0 formula would be 960x540 which it seems many fairly modern games won't allow any lower than about 1280x720 in general. so when you try to use that, you can tell if the game rejects it given you won't be able to select it or the general resolutions to choose from will be out of whack etc. but if that happens, just exit the game and remove the custom tweaks in Lutris and it will go back to normal) . but if you got 1440p or 2160p you can use the 1.5x or 2.0x if you want to squeeze more performance out of it if you don't mind sacrificing graphics further. but generally speaking I would stick to the 1.3x since it's probably a good balance of performance gains and visuals (although if someone was using 2160p monitor, at 2x formula, you would use precisely 1920x1080(1080p) (setting the 'key' and 'value' things like mentioned) and it would upscale to 2160p). on a 2160p(4k. 3840x2160) monitor at 1.5x formula it would be precisely 2560x1440(i.e. 1440p).

I unfortunately dont see GloriousEggroll or GE runner in Lutris. I only see :
System 8.0-rc5
WineHQDevel 8.0-rc5
WineHQStaging 8.0-rc5
Lutris-7.2-2-x86_64

Maybe Im not understanding something?
I would manually search the custom wine executable but I have 0 idea where its located

It's available through the Lutris menus (i.e. on main menu where it says 'Runners' then on the 'Wine' section, highlight it (the Wine section) with mouse and select that 'folder' icon (to the left of the 'gear' looking one) as you can download it through here if you want to with the 'install' icon there next to whatever version you want to install) but I just download it from here in general https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine ... m/releases

basically download "wine-lutris-GE-Proton7-35-x86_64.tar.xz" and then extract it to "~/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine" and then when you start up Lutris the game will probably automatically select it. if not, you can force it... right click game shortcut, select 'Configure > Runner options' then on 'Wine version' select it through here as it will show up like "lutris-GE-Proton7-XX-x86_64", then save it and it will use that.

that is specifically made for Lutris in that link, but it's basically the same exact thing if you install it through Lutris itself. it's just sometimes they are a bit behind updating it in Lutris if you need a newer version which is where that website I linked to comes in handy.

but if you go through the Lutris program, as I mentioned above, you can see it shows 7-35, 7-33, 7-28, 7-27, 7-14 etc. but if you had to get older versions, not that you would need to, you could get it from that website I posted. but currently Lutris offers the newest one, which is 7-35 (or you can get it from the link I posted as either way it's basically the same thing).

p.s. I am currently using the '7-28' which is a little older than the current '7-35'. either way, it will probably work the same though.

Glad you got it going as that's (Lutris/GloriousEggroll/Wine) my 'go to' combo for replaying the small amount of games on my hard drive with no online connectivity needed. that's why I prefer this Lutris setup over Steam.

there is about 5 games I replay (Mafia series (2002-2020)/RDR2 etc) and nearly all of them are quite stable (no crashes back to desktop at all, or rarely) besides one which is from 2002 and even that one did not crash often enough to stop me from completing the game.

You did not reinstall a bunch of junk with it did you?

I would just stick with the default stuff (5.15 kernel unless you have to upgrade. like try this first, if you have issues, then try moving to a newer kernel), then use the Wine/Lutris/GloriousEggroll combo and see what happens.

After reinstalling Mint I saw that my fps was even lower without the "Junk". Sticking to the default kernel and trying Lutris/Wine with GE, results in lower fps overall and less consistent frametimes, thats why I HAD to install them...But the issue still persists that clocks on my gpu just drop all of a sudden.

Right, I reinstalled Mint with XFCE, and with your recommedations of using Lutris with GE, Im still having the issue. I made no additional changes to kernel, didnt download something "exotic" and no "Junk". In fact, it made the problem even worse! Now instead of the clocks dropping for 3 seconds, it now drops up-to 7-8 seconds....

Re: GPU MHz drops to 200mhz for 3 seconds when gaming

Post by ThaCrip »

If the default stuff don't work, just try the simple kernel upgrade. try 5.19 first through 'Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels'. if that don't work you can use the newest one for Mint (i.e. sudo apt install linux-oem-22.04c ; which will give you 6.1.0 kernel ).

anyways, I looked up "HP Laptop 15s-eq3xxx" online and, at least according to https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP ... xxx/272029 it's not looking good for general gaming performance, especially on newer games as comments there say stuff like...

"This GPU can handle older games but it will struggle to render recent games at resolutions greater than 1080p." and... "This GPU can only handle very basic 3D games but it's fine for general computing tasks."

so I would not expect much from the GPU straight up. did you ever try lowering resolution of games to say 1280x720 (or so), with low graphics, just to see if that fairs any better?

because at least using their example there with the NVIDIA 2060S being the baseline of 100%, yours in comparison, according to tests there, show 12-16% on the four people who apparently have what you got (or so). even comparing that 2060S to my 1050 Ti 4GB GPU based on youtube[.]com/watch?v=Nj96iUFfNZY I would not be surprised if your GPU is just too weak for modern games.

still, it does seem odd that the frame rates are half way decent and then drop off a cliff for seconds etc.

but I would be curious to see your setup on Windows 10 temporarily as if performance is still fairly bad here, then it's not realistic to expect Linux to be any better. but if it does work well here, then at least you know what the GPU's potential roughly is and that it might just not like Linux etc. so unless you are trying to avoid Windows outright, Windows 10 might work well on it potentially as I would be curious just to see how it does here.

I have tried lowering the settings to the absolute minimum...it really makes no difference no matter what game I run though. Its still really odd that even under simple load the gpu clocks still drop. Im not running Cyberpunk obviously. Im trying games like Minecraft, Terraria, Wow. Also another observation, even with all the different kernels that you suggested. The whole system is freezing as well....This aint gpu issue as monitoring shows that the gpu and cpu (and ram for that matter) are barely stressed at all...So saying that 5625U is not capable of something, is not really correct.

I tried setting my cpu clocks to a certain limit and not go lower than 1600mhz(which helped with fps but gpu clock still plummets down to 200mhz), now need to find a way to do the same thing to the gpu.

I am not saying your CPU is slow, just the GPU part of it might be so-so in general.

still, I do get your general point though that even simple non-intensive GPU tasks it's acting up. so you make a legitimate point. I would see if there is any BIOS updates available for your laptop.

if I had that laptop I would run Windows 10 on it temporarily just to make sure that's stable and things run as expected. because if it's stable there, then at least you can be confident it's a Linux issue at that point. but if it acts up on Windows 10 to, then the problem is probably elsewhere (possibly faulty hardware, maybe a BIOS update etc). I would seriously look into testing out Windows 10 which it's easy enough to get a hold of a Win10 ISO to test it quickly, especially if you can easily trigger the issue you are experiencing.

p.s. might not be a bad idea to run a RAM test https://memtest.org/ ; run at least one full pass, which will take a hour or so, but letting it run overnight with say 5-10 passes would be better.

Thank you, I will try and properly test the laptop under windows 10, I have it dual booted with Mint. I will also go for memtest overnight just to be fully sure. Thank you for the suggestions.
