[SOLVED] Steam Proton games crash without window opening

Post by fifthtundrag »

Hi, I've been having trouble with Proton in that whenever I open up a game (Brick Rigs), it instantly crashes. I've tried proprietary drivers and open-source drivers but neither worked. I got the logs from the steam console and from PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. Its on a pretty old computer but it ran perfectly fine in Windows. All logs are posted below.

Probably better place for this game https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton ... Brick+Rigs
Its on a pretty old computer
There are several problems
- Every system and every environment can vary in gaming performance.
You can read about tweaks / tips / advices
viewtopic.php?p=1685721#p1685721
- You can choose from different graphics cards, each can have different performance.
Intel or Nvidia.
- The performance of open source drivers is not always better.
The Nouveau driver may contain deficiencies / shortcomings / flaws.
- Last driver ( Proprietary from Nvidia ) for GeForce GT 750M for Linux is 418.113 from 2019.11.5
( I seen this info in https://www.nvidia.co.uk/download/drive ... 3781/en-uk )
So this driver may not exist in a newer system.
Instead, there may be a weaker Nouveau.

Edited
But I'm not sure that's the root cause.

Its with all proton games, not just limited to this one! I mentioned already that I tried both Nvidia and open-source drivers.

1) Games work without Proton?
For example SuperTuxKart ?
https://supertuxkart.net/Main_Page

2) Do native games without Proton but with Steam work?
For example CycloHex https://store.steampowered.com/app/1882950/CycloHex/

3) Have you tried to run the games on a new ( linux ) user account?

4) Where does your "Steam" come from?
- repository ( for example from Synaptic package manager / apt command )
- snap
- flatpak
- from Steam website.

It seems like updating my driver version to 418.113 did it.
