Thanks for sharing the benchmarks. With Passmark you need to look at the individual test results to find out what's keeping the result low. However, the real test is when you run your applications and games. If the VM can handle that, who cares about the Passmark result?

I patched the Nvidia driver in Windows 10 and changed some settings in the qemu start script to support hypervisor extensions. The results are:

I'm getting somewhere! I've done some tweaking, but the main factor must be the cpu governor=performance on the host!

Yes! Finally after a very bumpy ride I finally managed to avoid a ‘reboot-loop’ when trying to install the Radeon drivers! But first: many thanks for this very extensive guide, Powerhouse. Without it I wouldn’t even have started :)

Whatever I tried with q35 as a machine, as soon as I attempted to install the Radeon drivers, I ended up with a reboot-loop… I finally switched to i440fx (pc), without the ioh3420 pci-express hub. The Radeon-drivers are installed and the VM appears to be stable!

There’s only one tiny thing still bugging me: Win10 refuses to install graphics drivers updates (they show up in Windows update for some reason), it fails and crashes. Passmark also shows issues with DirectX 12, hence the incomplete score. I’ll try to sort that one out later… Lets first enjoy this milestone a bit.

WEI gives me a score of 8.0, which appears ‘not too bad’. Rome II Total War appears to run fine :D

Here are my specs:
Host:
Core i7 6700
MSI Z170a SLI Plus
16 GB memory DDR4 2133MHz
256 GB Intel 600P PCIE M.2 SSD
OS: Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon
Graphics: Intel HD 530
Virtualization: KVM - Qemu

Guest:
4 vCPU cores
i440fx v2.5
8 GB memory, with hugepages
45GB bootdisk (RAW image + qcow2 snapshot)
OS: Windows 10
Graphics: Radeon RX 470 Gaming x 4G

UPDATE: I've sorted it out... Apparently I was using a very old Win10 image. I've downloaded a fresh one from Microsoft, reinstalled and this one works like a charm! I still have to use i440fx without ioh3420 pcie hub, other combinations won't work.

Passmark now finishes completely and instead of 2630.5 I'm presented with a whopping 4447.5!

Thanks davidem! This is great news. Nice performance too.

I'd like to ask you to share your setup (including the problems you ran into and how you solved them) in the tutorial thread, since only a few will notice these posts here. The most surprising part is that a newer version of Windows 10 solved your graphics driver issue.

Regarding q35 versus the standard i440fx 2.5 (pc): There are pros and cons for both. Some say don't touch q35, others (incl. me) report improved performance with the q35 option. Your post may help others in guiding them to a working Windows 10 VM.

i neglected to post this previously. I also need to follow better instructions, i will go back and run passmark 8 later. had to go to work!

this is all with iothreads and NO hugepages.

These are great results, given the fact that you run 2 VMs concurrently on a i3-6100 CPU!

My GPU, RAM and SSD is dragging down my score, GPU is being fixed sometime this week but memory and ssd will have to stay as is for now.

MSI Z97 Gaming 9 ACK
Intel i7 4790 (2 Cores 2 Threads or Guest)
16 Gig Adata 1600DDR3 L (10Gig for guest. Using hugepages)
Kingston SV300 128Gig SSD (For Mint host)
Samsung Evo 850 250Gig (Passed through via a SATA controller. The score is before optimization)
Gigabyte GTX 670 2Gig Windforce 3 Nvidia Driver 378.49 (Passed through)
Intel Graphics (For host)
Linux Mint 18.1 Kernel 4.9 (For Host)
Windows 10 Home 64 bit build 1706 (For Guest)

The board is making me jump through hoops to get the attachment file size right, i'll try again later. For now here's my baseline.

It's not terrible but i was expecting more from the Samsung Evo 850 but i guess the m.2 ssd's has raised the bar somewhat.

I got the exact same SSD and my disk mark is around 4750 to 5000. Your disk mark is way too low, unless caching raises my disk mark to unreasonable heights. Somewhere I posted links on different configurations and the resulting disk performance. See also the link to the video I posted above.

I think i won't bother tweaking. I installed my new gtx980 earlier and i'm very happy with the performance, it's not slow at all. Doom gave me a solid 60fps in outdoor areas where it used to dip as low as 23fps with my gtx 670.
Also i'm a bit paranoid when it comes to virtual discs, if the physical disk fails it just adds complications to recovering data. I do only use the vm for gaming so it's not realy that important but my needs may change.

My new baseline using a QCOW2 disk with virtio controller on a Samsung Evo 850 250 with ext4 filesystem
http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V8/di ... 8375511191

So yeah, QCOW/Virtio is vastly superior to bare metal controller. The GPU took a huge leap because i upgraded from a GTX670 to a GTX980.

VM (Note: not yet optimized)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 1700 (passing threads 7-15)
GPU (Mint): R9 290X (390x bios)
GPU (Win10-VM): R9 290X (390x bios)
Disk: Samsung 960 NVME

WEI score: 8.1

Disk speed output from winsat formal (dunno if anyone cares about the cpu/crypto & d3d tests, I don't understand those numbers):

Code: Select all

> Disk Sequential 64.0 Read 895.79 MB/s 8.4
> Disk Random 16.0 Read 215.04 MB/s 7.8
I don't have Passmark, but for 3DMark tests:

Firestrike
Graphics: 9213
Physics: 6540
Combined: 2613

Baremetal comparison (note: not quite like-for-like. Different system)
Graphics: 11931
Physics: 7187
Combined: 4397

Here some extensive benchmarks comparing a Windows native installation with the KVM VM counterpart. It's not Passmark, however.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

More on these benchmarks and a video here: https://forum.level1techs.com/t/how-fas ... nce/110192

This benchmark shows that the performance penalty of running Windows in a VM is negligible.
