Mint 18.3 beats Ubuntu 17.10 (xorg) in Unigine Superposition even when running in VM (But windows beats them both)

Post by cantfind »

I'm running Unigine Superposition 1.0 on 1080p extreme pre-set (so that I could compare it to other benchmarks online), here are my results to anyone it may interest:

If you want other benchmarks, I can run them as well.

Ubuntu 17.10 (4.13 kernel, nvidia 390 drivers) bare metal - gets 4788 score.

Mint 18.3 (4.13 kernel nvidia 390 drivers) run with qemu+kvm with pci-passthrough - gets 4963

Win10 (nvidia 397) run with qemu+kvm with pci-passthrough - gets 5698 (using DirectX) 4970 (using openGL)

Using Cinnamon in Ubuntu instead of Gnome, I get 4966 - which is exactly the same as the mint VM. - seems like Gnome has more adverse effects than running in VM!

System is core i7 7700k (stock speed), 1080ti (stock speed).

Seems like there's almost no performance hit from using machines in vm with pci-passthrough... I was doing this test because I was getting around 40 fps in The Witcher 3 on ultra settings 1440p, and I didn't know if that's up to par.

what graphics driver is being used for each installation? because non-nvidia (noveau) graphics drivers can have pretty bad performance on nvidia cards and i heard updated (manually installed) drivers on linux can increase performance by a significant amount (i haven't tested)

You heard correctly, but to get full power out of a decent nVidia card requires xorg.conf additions.

what additions were you referring to that would increase performance?

Last I checked vga/pci passthrough with regular GPU's was.... problematic to say the least.

Code: Select all

"RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x0; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1"
"TripleBuffer" "True"
{ ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }
If you have a high-end discreet nVidia card, there's more than enough information there for you to search and check out how to do it for your card.
