Can't start steam suddenly

Post by kenoman » Mon Jun 04, 2018 5:37 pm

I can't start steam anymore, but it worked before. Running Nvidia graphics if thats something you should know about!
I get this error message.

Code: Select all

Running Steam on linuxmint 18.3 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Pins up-to-date!
[2018-06-04 23:36:13] Startup - updater built May 18 2018 14:50:32
SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)

Thanks in advance!

Please see https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam- ... ssues/4909. I.e., try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mesa-utils:i386
and reboot.

And other than that: are you using the repository version of Steam (-installer) or the Flatpak one? If former I'd advise to uninstall it and install latter (through Software manager -> Flatpak). The above github report seems to imply an issue with your 32-bit mesa install; I expect the Flatpak version would not have any such issue.

Same problem all of a sudden. I did as suggested and uninstalled steam client and installed flatpack version. Would have been nice to know I would lose all my games and have to reinstall them ...

You wouldn't have had to had you just changed the new installation's library directory to the old one (or added the old one): Options -> Downloads -> Steam-library folders. You in fact probably still can.

With the repository version the default library is somewhere under ~/.steam/ I believe, with the Flatpak version it's under ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/. For either version I'd in fact advise to copy the Steam-libary to say ~/Games/SteamLibrary, set it as the default library and then delete the original location. I don't actually do any gaming on Linux, have the Steam client installed only for store/browse purposes, and shall as such not in fact test if that works also with the (sandboxed) Flatpak version but would expect no issue; postpone deleting the original location until sure.

Never had a different setup, on Windows nor Linux; it does not make much sense to me to have huge game libraries "hidden" somewhere under C:\Program Files, ~/.steam or ~/.var/app.
