Wine in LM19

Post by rambo919 »

Dunno if this is a stupid question or not but are there negative effects to installing stable and development branches at the same time?

Also is it ok to stick to the repo's or would it be better to use the official wine ppa?

Installed development from repo's but there are no menu entries at all which worked fine automatically in previous LM releases from what I remember. Also no associations happen. Is this a repo's or a development thing? Using the menu editor I just find an empty uneditable "wine-wine" entry. Had all repo wine versions installed at some point dunno if this caused something.

Hello I'm not sure you can install them at the same time I believe if you install the newer one it will just overwrite the stable branch.
if you want multiple wine version I would install Playonlinux it allows you to runs many wine versions and select the one you want. (The versions available go up to 3.11 at the moment) Then when you install the programs.
Also if your going to be using any 32 bit windows apps you'll need to install the IA32 libs (these may be instaledl with synaptic by searching for ia32) which are no longer pulled as dependencies with wine in Mint 19.
I Would not use the PPA if it can be avoided.
Good Luck.
(Note: you can read more about playonlinux here: https://www.playonlinux.com/en/ and you can install it with this command in a terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt install playonlinux
when installed it will be found in the Accessories menu in Cinnamon)

oh no sir, I had em all installed at the exact same time at one point.... surprised me too tbh. Only the lowest wine version was picked up by "wine --version" though.

The odd thing for me is that absolutely no wine menu entries ever got added and no associations happened. Wine itself seems to work fine though though at one point I got an error that gecko cannot be found and no prefix that gets created ever offers to install it for me... at some point I might just have to go with the PPA to see if it changes things though I don't necessarily want to at this point.

There DOES seem to be a difference in handling wine in general as having had at one point only the 64bit version installed "wine --version" suggested I install the 32bit version as well.

I can always install Q4Wine (might do it eventually anyway) and use it's menus but that would be more of a workaround to what seems like it could possibly be a problem for some obscure thing sometime in the future. And yes playonlinux is awesome for stubborn apps but not desirable for everything.

I have used wine from all angles of wine in LM17 and then up to LM18.2 so I can tell that this is behavior that needs to be more easily streamlined if only for noobs who will get terribly confused. Luckily for me this is only in a VM at this point but I would like a good fix ready for when I do eventually move back to linux full time again. I guess more than a few things changed in the new base that needs to be ironed out.

Sigh rip PlayOnLinux, ran into the exact same problems installing MS software I did in LM18 that were not there in LM17. Somewhere along the way it stopped playing nice with x64 systems running x86 software.... it's scripts are horribly outdated for whatever was changed in between versions giving wonderful app windows that only appear as lines so small you can miss them if you were not already looking for them, this is due to FreeType incompatibilities that have been an obvious problem for years with the workaround fixes only ending up making the app's crash. The same bug getting reported again and again.... rip PoL hello Q4Wine. Also it seems that PoL v5 has been "imminent" since 2015 so who knows how alive or dead it actually is.

Oddly enough after manually installing Office 2007 it's menu items appeared in the Wine Menu so it's only wine itself which does not show it's items, well that's where Q4Wine come in at least. So this is partially solved I guess but it does not really feel solved.

EDIT: ok that was a bit bitter, PoL can still be used manually.... wine versions older than 3 is still a problem though.

Did you install the IA32 libs?

Yep, it's a specific bug that makes the running windows minuscule because it cannot render the fonts correctly.... the font libs as far as I can tell got updated to v6 while the scripts still rely on v2.... might be wrong about the exact version numbering. In any case it seems the scripts keep trying to download and use the old versions that don't exist anymore. These two links for example help describe the problem, when I attempt the fix (rm command) mentioned in the second link there is no complaining but the app install crashes. Also there might be something a bit off about the wine versions compiled for PoL I can't remember, it's bin a long day of googling....
