The longest journey install just won't work.
I don't understand why. It worked the first time I tried it. I mean, it says it was installed, but then POL never makes the icons or anything.

I've tried playing this game in POL/WINE and haven't had much luck, there's a mouse bug that stops the action menu coming up. Take a look at ResidualVM, the nightly build can run the game but the engine isn't finished so expected some rough edges.
