Minecraft: Dungeons

Post by JoeFootball »

"...coming to PC in 2019." I'm inferring this is going to be like the Java-based version of Minecraft.

They don't specify it will be available on Linux, only "PC" which usually means Windows.

As I understand it, there is no cross play between the Java-based Minecraft that is available for Linux and the native release of Minecraft for Windows and other platforms. They look the same but they are different games developed by different teams. That Minecraft: Dungeons is made by the team in Sweden, where the Java-based Minecraft also comes from, may possibly offer a glimmer of hope that they will make it available for Linux but I doubt it.

Anybody looking for something now on Linux could take a look at for example:
- https://www.minetest.net classic Minecraft with lots of mods available to extend it (suitable for creative mode without mods but bit bare otherwise)
- https://terasology.org is like Minecraft in ultra high definition, worth a look
- http://terraria.org/ is like 2D Minecraft?
Minetest is available through Software Manager. Terasology I think is a Java game and you can download the launcher from their website. Terraria is a commercial game, available through platforms like Steam.

After further review, I found there is indeed a separate non-Java "Minecraft for Windows 10" version for PCs. I didn't know that. Hmm.

That appears to be the case.

Now that I think about it, if it were a Java-based version, why would they limit advertising it for "PC" rather than "cross-platform". *sigh*

If you use the Minecraft Launcher on Linux, it shows Minecraft Dungeons as an option, of course, you can't play it since it's not out yet, and I believe that the launcher is the same across all the different available operating systems, but it still it wouldn't make sense to show it on Linux if you can't play it.
