You have a desktop. Why would you do that? Save some grief and add another hard drive (SSD) devoted to Linux. Corsair has some fairly inexpensive direct from factory.

All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

I've been a linux user for nearing two decades now, 16 years or so linux-only; the first 16. 4 years ago I added a Window dual-boot, 2 or 3 years ago moved it and any and all gaming to a secondary system. That is, although I'm not a fan of dual-booting, it's a heck of a lot better than trying to use Linux for gaming, at the very least when you're not very interested in tinkering with the system in that context --- and I myself am not, since when I want to play a game I very specifically do NOT want to do that which I otherwise do, i.e., tinker with computer systems.

At the moment there's Proton, and Vulkan, and... but there's always been The Promise for those entire two decades, and little else. Again unless you'd find it to be a hobby in and of itself, I would advise you not waste time on gaming on Linux. Yes, dual-boot or even better, keep a secondary system around for gaming if possible. Using Linux for gaming is still for masochists and I have little confidence this will improve shortly.

He's using Cinnamon - no compiz in Cinnamon.

good to know, and I'm on MATE as you are aware. Does Cinnamon have something similar for those effects in Compiz?

There are the Cinnamon shells effects - I don't think they would have any impact on gaming performance.

Possibly more relevant is the Compositor options in General

I wouldn't get hung up on Kaby Lake vs Coffee Lake.

My 8th gen processor is identified in inxi as a Kaby Lake rev B - but the OpenGL renderer is identified as Whisky Lake.

Code: Select all

CPU: Topology: Quad Core model: Intel Core i5-8265U bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Kaby Lake rev: B

But Intel call it Whisky Lake https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... 0-ghz.html
