[Solved] Subnautica Below Zero

I'm trying to get Subnautica Below Zero to work on my system using proton. I click the desktop icon and it says it is opening by never does. I was running proton 4.2, but when that didn't work I upgraded to 5, which still didn't work. I went into settings to force Proton 5, also without change. When I attempt to uninstall proton 4.2 from the system I get an error which says "An unexpected error occurred attempting to remove proton 4.2." I tried searching online for a solution, but most of the stuff I found just said how well it runs on proton. I was able to run the original Subnautica on this laptop.

My system specs are:
CPU: i5-2520M'
RAM: 8 GB
Crucial 500 GB SSD
Graphics: Radeon HD 6400M
OS: Mint 19.3

https://www.protondb.com/app/848450 says it should work fine with Proton 5.

Try setting launch option PROTON_LOG=1 and start the game. That should write a steam-<some id>.log debug log to your home directory which may have something relevant. See https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/ for more launch options.

And after you forced Proton 5 in Steam, did the game install update? Else try uninstalling the game, double-checking you have Proton 5 forced for it, and then reinstalling.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling after forcing proton 5 without success. The log list or errors was fairly ugly and I'm not sure where to start with it.

Yes that log didn't provide much if any useful information about the game not starting. IDK what to try next.

I've had some Linux game on Steam give me problems in the past and could just open its local files directory, where the executable was, and run that from a terminal to get info about why it was crashing. I don't know if or how you can do that with Proton.

I figured it out. My laptop is so old the GPU doesn't support Vulkan. I was able to get it working using the command PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%.

It is so old the frame rate were unplayable, but it least the mystery is solved.
