Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
you wont face any issues
ive gamed using Mint Cinnamon on a SIGNIFICANTLY weaker laptop without issues
my current pc is a I3 8100,1650 and 16gb of ram
you wont care about a DE after passing 4gb of system ram, possibly less aswell,go for it
linux gaming has come a long way in recent years

Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
I actually do not play the big title games on Linux or through WINE (not in a long time, anyway), but one thing I am still very enthusiastic about is game emulation. Linux Mint 19 when it was on my desktop ran PSX2 (the PlayStation 2 emulator) flawlessly. Even now, my LM20 laptop can run ePSXe (PS1 emu) at full speed. Granted, if you're into online gaming with multiple players, then emulation likely will not help you much. To my knowing, however, most big multiplay games (CS GO and Rocket League are the first to come to mind) are already available on Linux, and LM20 Cinnamon will run them flawlessly. You only need capable hardware and graphics.

Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
I don't dual boot Windows, only use Mint Cinnamon.
My main PC is a Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB RAM and a Radeon RX480 8GB, while my notebook is an i5-3320 4GB (soon 8GB) RAM and a Radeon HD7570M 1GB. I play games that are older and/or has low system requirements on the notebook and heavier titles on the desktop.
Performance wise I'd expect to give away about 10% performance on average, so let's say instead of 80fps I'd expect to have 72fps. But that's pretty much unrelated to the DE. It comes from the overhead of the compatibility layer. Sometimes the performance deficit is larger, sometimes games run even faster and crash less than on Windows. Also, as the compatibility layers improve the performance difference shrinks.
Though there are some more problematic games. I'd say 99% of the single player games run without issue or very little tinkering. Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend is something I have personal experience with. It was a problem child for a long time, but now it runs well both on my laptop and my desktop. While Horizon Zero Dawn seems to be still broken. It seems to be problematic on Windows too and it being a popular game I'd expect to be fixed in a couple of weeks.
The real problems are the multiplayer games. Certain anti-cheat solutions (EAC, BattlEye) detects the compatibility layer as modified Windows and assumes it was done in order to cheat and just breaks the game. So if you plan to get into PUBG, Destiny 2 or R6 Siege I have bad news.

Mint Cinnamon is fine to game with, I can game comfortably with this:
Cheat mode detection and DRM can be an issue but I haven't got any games affected by that installed.

Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
I personally stick to Windows 10 for gaming as while Linux does technically support gaming, it's not quite "there" yet on the level that Windows is.
Gaming (And programs that don't work in WINE) is the ONLY reason I keep Winblowz around and is the only thing I use it for and nothing but. Were it not for that, I would've gotten rid of Winblowz PERMANENTLY, long ago. My main OS of choice is Linux Mint, which I use for any and every thing BUT gaming. I don't dual-boot, though and they are on separate laptops.

Wow, I have a similar setup to antikytheria, and I've also had little to no issues in Mint 20 (aside from forgetting to format my 1TB hdd when I installed it lol):

Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
The only Windows game I play is Diablo 3. What I do is install WineHQ, then install Lutris, then install Diablo 3 through Lutris. Lutris is another game platform, like steam, that allows many Windows games to be installed and played on Linux using Wine+scripts. Personally I don't see any performance difference.
Install instructions:

Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
For top notch-gaming i suggest you to disable middle mouse button emulation (currently I think its off by default).
Also there is some small delay using desktop environments like cinnamon (for whatever reason).
For high level competitive play I suggest you a tiny environment like openbox.
You can change those just by log out and log in again.

Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
I just started getting into games on mint and I couldn’t be happier a couple games do have little issues but no huge deal breakers I even play Skyrim (voices n background music doesn’t play) and it’s jus a 2017 dell inspiron 15 3000 series with just an i3 intel core but overall it’s been a blast playing games I couldn’t really play as a kid or even games I played as a kid great experience on my end

Re: Gaming on Linux Mint
Gaming on Linux has some unique look & feel to it, compared to windows,
it seems to work just fine. The only real noticeable problems are mostly that
the Hardware & Software Drivers Installed depend on what is available for
Linux to offer People.
AMD Users don't really have much in terms of Gaming Improvements,
Where as Linux supports something in terms for NVidea Gamers.
As for the Games themselves, you have most Content going to Windows
1st, where as Linux seems to get them later if any at all.
But the nice thing, is that Linux has it's own Games as well. Sorta.
The down side i've found was that I had Compatibility issues between both Versions
when dealing with a Particular Game I had...
As far as Games actually being functional on Linux & Running better then Windows?
Hard to say, as I don't have enough Games to compare the two.

I Don't have much other Games that Run at all on Linux as they are Windows only Games.
So I Don't Have Much To Go On For Testing & Comparing The Two Operating Systems Capabilities.
I know that my: Linux Mint Desktop Runs Smoother & Faster Then It Does On Windows 10, though.
