Steam on various accounts?

Post by Blindekinder »

Hi!

I've just installed a new computer, and I wanted to know which would be the best solution for Steam on Linux (which works well!):
  • There are two drives: a small SSD, and a big HDD
  • Linux and W are installed on the SSD, and /home is on HDD
  • There are three Mint users accounts (one admin, and two normal)
  • steam has to run in "family mode" for two accounts, since they are children. Of course I can enter the password to enter normal mode...
The point is that Steam installs the games on /home/user/.steam, that is to say on the HDD, which is not convenient, and once for each Mint account.
An idea would be to let Steam install a .steam on each account, but ask for another gamefiles location (e.g. /.steam, on SSD)
Is it a good idea?

You can change where games are saved by default in the Steam Client. The ones you have already installed can also be moved from the properties dialogue for them.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

yes, I already used that feature on my computer (when my drive was full)
but where do I create the new folder in this case? with which permissions?

Ok, I made some tries, and I experienced permission issues.

Finally:
-I created a group game
-put every user in game
-I created a /SteamLibrary folder in /usr
-user is me (admin user)
-group is game
-permissions are 0775

I installed Steam on each account and selected /etc/SteamLibrary as default folder

It seems to work, but is it coherent?

of course it isn't:
any file created won't be in game group...

I don't have multiple accounts for steam on Linux machines so you would be the better judge of how well it works.

Have you tried asking in the Steam Client's own internal community Support topics for help with this? You may get trolled by a few idiots but Valve themselves will respond or another user who made it work eventually.

Finally, the group trick is working, just needed to chgrp the copied files, the files created by steam goes to game group automatically...
