Game on Wine doesn't run, says no GPU with directx 11 found

Post by klaus5900 »

Hi guys
I am trying to launch a game using Lutris and wine but wine keeps getting me this message "your computer does not meet the minimum requirements for running this game . gpu does not support directx 11 which is required "
However i used to run this game on windows all the time with no problems at all

Re: Game on Wine doesn't run, says no GPU with directx 11 found

Post by SMG »

Welcome to the forum klaus5900.

A response to a question about Directx 11 on linux indicates "directx 11 only exists on windows. MS does not make it for other OSs...The only possible way to play a windows game on Linux is to use translation layers like Wine/DXVK that translates Dx11 calls to things that linux can understand.".

Whether you can do that will depend on the game. You have not mentioned the name of the game. Maybe there are other options to play it. I will make some general comments to keep in mind.

First, your system is currently rendering with the Intel graphics. Do you know if you were using Intel or AMD when you ran the game in Windows? You may need to set the DRI_PRIME parameter to switch to using AMD for the game as described in this thread Switchable Graphics on a Laptop.

Graphics: Device-1: Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:0a16
Device-2: AMD Venus PRO [Radeon HD 8850M / R9 M265X] vendor: Dell driver: radeon
v: kernel bus ID: 03:00.0 chip ID: 1002:6823
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: ati,modesetting,radeon unloaded: fbdev,vesa
resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 4400 (HSW GT2) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.2.6
compat-v: 3.0 direct render: Yes

Sometimes games require passing specific commands or arguments to the game software (other than the DRI_PRIME I mentioned) when launching the game for it to run properly. This can depend on the game and how you are running it (WINE/Lutris, Steam/Proton, or native Linux).

I hope that helps.

One should always take anything from reddit with a supertanker full of salt. In fact, I'm stunned it's even being quoted.

The message that the OP reported states, "gpu does not support directx 11". The fact is, all modern video cards above the most basic support DirectX, and the OP's Intel GPU supports DirectX 11. The real problem is that wine does not have access to the hardware layer therefore it cannot access DirectX on the video card. The solution to this is, according to some irresponsible websites, is to install the Windows DirectX libraries, but wine does not support this because a) it doesn't work, b) it breaks wine, and c) it is banned as a discussion topic at WineHQ.

Without a Windows OS, the OP is stuck for playing this game. With the specs of the CPU I wouldn't even recommend a VM.

Anyway, that's my 1c's worth. Keep the change :)

Edit: Just to add, if the application needed the libraries, it would offer to install them, or at least it should, but it's didn't tell the user to do that. It interrogated the video card and got knocked back.

I'm curious if DXVK is even installed.

Is if only running that first command on that page will solve the problem.
