Help! I am not getting good FPS on CSGO

Post by Harikesh G »

My specs are :-

CPU = AMD sempron 145 1 thread, 1 core
Ram = 4 GB DDR2
GPU = GTX 1050 ti
motherboard = Asus M2N68AM-PLUS
Monitor = 60hz refresh rate
OS - x64 Linux mint 20.1 Ulyassa

CSGO settings = all low, bilinear, 1280x720(trying to lower down resolution to get better fps)

I have installed it through steam and set the path to a second partition as my main disk has only 60GB of free space so my second disc space is 234 GB

I am getting lower than 10 fps please help!

Welcome to the forum, Harikesh G.

When you say you have installed "it" are you referring specifically to CSGO?

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware and give us an idea if the graphics drivers seem to be installed correctly.

Hey Harikesh G and welcome to linux mint and the forum first of. sidenote your computer is 11 years old 06/10/2010.That said, not a expert on steam here but check the settings if there is an option in steam that the csgo is using your NVIDIA card instead of the built in. also check your version of steam the game is using.

good luck

Graphic Card: AMD ATI Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX/7900M

I do not understand what this means. Your data indicates Mint sees one drive and there is only one partition on which Mint is installed. There is no second partition or second disk seen by Mint.

Code: Select all

Drives:
  Local Storage: total: 465.76 GiB used: 170.93 GiB (36.7%)
  ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Western Digital model: WD5000AAVS-00ZTB0
  size: 465.76 GiB speed: 3.0 Gb/s serial: <filter> rev: 1B01 scheme: MBR
Partition:
  ID-1: / size: 190.12 GiB used: 93.23 GiB (49.0%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda5
I did not see anything else in the data which might indicate a problem.

Please provide the output of cat /etc/fstab and blkid and enclose the results of each in code tags like you did for the inxi information. This output may give a clue as to what partitions are available.

I did find this How to fix stuttering & frame drops in CSGO, but that is general advice and not Linux specific.

for cat /etc/fstab

Code: Select all

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

UUID=57F6-853F  /boot/efi       vfat    umask=0077      0       1
/swapfile                                 none            swap    sw              0       0

For blkid

The partitions listed in fstab is what Mint sees when it boots. Your fstab lists root partition, (sda5) boot/efi partition (sda3), and a swapfile.

Blkid sees two partitions with ext4 file systems (sda2 and sda5). What is sda2?

I use to have a windows 8 copy on sda2 but because it slowed down the computer I removed it and mounted it on linux mint to get extra storage

I do not understand how a copy of an operating system that is not running would slow down the computer. Now if you removed Windows 8 because Windows8 was running slow and you did not like it, that I understand.
Harikesh G wrote: Wed Jul 07, 2021 11:29 pmand mounted it on linux mint to get extra storage
Are you using it just for storage or is that where you installed the game?

You indicated in your first post, "I have installed it through steam and set the path to a second partition as my main disk has only 60GB of free space so my second disc space is 234 GB"

I do not understand what you mean by your "main disk has only 60GB". Your Mint partition is 190 GiB of which 93 GiB is used which means your Mint partition has 100GiB of space available.

Also, your Mint system only has one partition. Your hard drive has more than one partition, but Mint only has one.

I do not know how Steam and/or Mint handle installing programs to a partition which is not seen by Mint when you boot (which is what it sounds like you did). Maybe someone else will know the best way to handle that.

Yeah I removed a lot of stuff from the main disc and yes Windows 8 needed more ram and was not running well basically a Ram problem and then from then on told steam to install any game on my disc at /mnt/disc name after I removed the Windows OS

How are you mounting that partition? You do not have that partition listed in fstab, so it is not mounting with the operating system. That could be a factor in what is happening, but I do not know enough about how Steam works when games are mounted on a different partition than where the operating system is located to know if that is the case.

Maybe someone else will know.

I just happened to see this thread After upgrade to Mint 20.2 steam play no longer works. where Kris345 mentions libraries on other ext4 partitions and fstab.

Ok..the reason cs:go is running slowly at 720p resolution is because of that cpu...You are extremely cpu bottlenecked.

*** inxi -fxxrz data or any other isn't going to change that fact, sorry SMG..no insult meant, but facts are facts...THIS..I know from experience. **

I had a 1GZH intel celeron back in 2001 in my very first PC ( and only prebuilt I've ever purchased = Dell 100d smartstep which I installed a 64MB pci , no express..mind you, slot vid card) that could barely play counter strike back when it was just a half life mod of 1.6 version days at 1024x768 resolution at medium settings well enough.

That celeron is alittle bit faster than that amd sempron due to much better ipc although slower overall clock speeds. That intel cpu I had also struggled to feed the video card enough data fast enough even at 1280x720p rez at some low..some medium settings. Until I could afford to build my first custom built PC in summer 2004 with an amd windsor 2.2ghz single core cpu, I had to settle for 1024x768 rez at medium settings to have a smooth experience with that setup.

Yes..I realize you have a much more powerful gpu in that gtx 1050ti, but cs:go is a very cpu bound game at any resolution under 2560x1440p. 1080p and lower rez= that cpu is doing just as much important work as the gpu.

Remember now, CS:GO is a full meal deal game...far more ...well...bloated versus the old 1.5, and 1.6 half life mod side game days of 2000 through 2001 ish or 2002....with more tech..more textures...many graphical advances are a part of it now.

Sooner you get an actual gaming cpu ( doesn't have to be a intel xx70 or xx90 whatever gen or also doesn't have to be a ryzen 1700, 2700, 3700, or 5800x either, but a reasonable mid ranged one..hell even a 4590 as old as that is now would be worlds apart upgrade or even a ryzen 3300x would be plenty for 1080p resolution gaming and at better graphical settings) the better.

Just keep your eyes glued to sites like newegg, amazon, etc to see who gets some more cpu's in stock and at reasonable pricing
