How do I properly set up Mame Arcade Emulator??

Post by motoryzen »

I've been bashing my skull against a steel wall on this having tried Linux native version of Mame, And windows versions. I just want to be able to play a few arcade games like the 1993 Virtua Fighter ( 1st one) and no matter what I've tried nothing works. Mame launches fine but I always get error messages when trying to launch Virtual Fighter no matter what version or what site I get it from.

Can anyone walk me through accomplishing my mission?

I don't care if it's the native Linux Mame version ..or windows version and playing it via Wine.

1.) Where did you download MAME? From Ubuntu's repositories? (focal 0.220 which is the base for Linux Mint 20.3 assuming you are using this linux version) or from C. Falco's PPA? (0.243 which is the latest version of MAME)

2.) What kind of error messages did you get? Check whenever you have the required files you need to run your games and make sure you have the parent ROMS first:

https://docs.mamedev.org/usingmame/aboutromsets.html
https://docs.mamedev.org/usingmame/comm ... ssing-roms

3.) As of version 0.243, the Virtua Fighter romset is currently in it's preliminary stages so don't expect it to work in an accurate state yet:

http://adb.arcadeitalia.net/dettaglio_m ... earch_id=1
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mamed ... model1.cpp
- Virtua Fighter
* Gameplay mechanics - specifically, collision detection - are significantly broken due to
imperfect TGP RAM port emulation or hookup. This is observable in both attract mode and
in-game. It seems to break when both characters attack at the same time.
4.) The alternatives for playing the first Virtua Fighter is to find a Sega Saturn CD (make sure you get Virtua Fighter Remix as this is relatively the definitive port in that system if you can even get one) of the game and either play it through the real thing or use a Saturn emulator like Mednafen. Using older and broken versions of MAME (i.e. 0.83, "MAME 2003", RetroArch, etc.) is highly not recommended.

5.) For legal reasons, do not ask where to find those romsets and other required files and please do not PM me about this. The search engine of your choice is your friend.
