I have an Athlon X2 5200+ running Mint 19.3. It have an Nvidia GT620 running the Nvidia 390 driver. Portal launches and quits. I have Vulkan installed. I tried a GT710 with the newer driver it looked as if it was processing Vulkan vectors, but then again it just quit. It's an old game it shouldn't need a heavy duty video card. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and Steam. Other games work. Does anyone have any ideas?

You could try other versions of Proton on Steam.
You can change versions by going into Settings -> Steam Play -> select a different version in the combo box. That sounds about right.
