What are we playing nowadays?

Post by MurphCID »

For me, an old guy, I have my standard games: Civ V, and Civ VI. Sometimes the Battle for Wesnoth. Mostly Civ V on the laptop.

I'm not much of a gamer.

I recently finished my most recent trip through Dungeons of Dredmor, and I'm taking baby steps on Chess.com to improve there.

I'm sort'a waiting on Diablo 4. For that, I'm willing to boot into Windows.

Noice! I enjoyed playing Diablo III on the XBOX. Can't believe we're getting Diablo IV. Hopefully it won't just be cash-grab. :?

I just stumbled across an old game that i used to love playing that apparently is now abandonware and has a community that is maintaining online servers to play on. Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth Series!

You can grab the games and patches here.

Then install them in Lutris along with the online play software provided from these guys.

Wonderful games that bring back great memories, hope you enjoy too!

Awesome. But if they're online games, won't that be a problem in Linux, because of Linux so often tripping up anti-cheat engines?

If this question was in response to me, then no its not an issue. You launch the app that you download from T3A:Online website and you use that to hook the launcher for the game. They dont use any anticheat at all or one that is compatable with linux. Activision has abandoned the game so their servers are no longer active and the T3A software redirects the request for online access to their own servers. Works very well. You can either match up in game or what most people seem to do is use the discord server to agree on a server name and password and then they go from there.

Well, I only play online, against other people.... On www.chess.com. I highly recommend it. Also for fine game analysis, tutorials etc.

But Eboard is not so bad a user interface for playing against the machine. You can install several engines for it.

Like this you can install Eboard together with a series of engines:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install eboard gnuchess crafty sjeng hoichess phalanx
--Edit: I just gave it a try again, and the only usable engine was Sjeng.....

The first game I ever played properly on Linux was a few months ago "Guts and Glory". It could have done with more official levels, as it didn't take me long to complete. It does have fan made levels to flesh it out though. Fun while it lasted.

I recently played Moebius. It had some puzzles that would have been impossible to get past without a walkthrough, but overall, it was decent enough. Plus it didn't crash once, and ran with a smooth frame rate.

There aren't many Linux compatible games in my steam account, but I intend to collect more in the future. It's quite the novelty.
