Windows Proton Games are not launching in steam

Post by makuma »

Hi folks,

i have an strange behavior with steam. there are several games installed, and i splitted them into multiple groups
1. Linux native games in steam
2. Windows native games in steam via Proton
3. Games which are not running via steam (proton) but lutris (wine)

1. Group is working in steam absolutely fine
3. Group is running perfectly via Lutris, i can play any game installed
2. Group is now longer working, i do not know when or why this happened, but i think it could be a gpu driver update, the games are not launching at all,
this means when clicking on launch/play the steam popup window "launching....game xxx" appears and this is end of story, also updating games from group 2 do not seem to finish, they tend to hang at 99% (finalizing), when restarting pc the game is then at 100% but i do not think the install worked fine, it is just displaying 100%.

i have added the proton_log=1 to the start parameters but there is not even a log produced
so i went to start steam via console to see the messages it produces while starting a game from group 2.

Re: Windows Proton Games are not launching in steam

I generally prefer Lutris paired with GloriousEggroll runner for Lutris (https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine ... m/releases) over Steam in general since it's offline where as Steam is not.

I am using Linux Mint v21.0-Xfce with 5.15 kernel and same NVIDIA driver as you, but I got a 1050 Ti 4GB.

p.s. I can't really comment much in regards to Steam since, while I do have it, I generally don't use it.
MainPC: i5-3550 (undervolted by -0.120v (CPU runs 12c cooler) /w stock i3-2120 hs/fan) | 1050 Ti 4GB | 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RAM | Backups: AMD E-300 CPU (8GB RAM) / Athlon X2 3600+ CPU (@2.3GHz@1.35v) (4GB RAM) | All /w Mint 21.x-Xfce

Does this happen with all versions of Proton?
I also noticed you have added the nvidia driver PPA. You don't really need it. You can mess up things by switching drivers between official repo and this ppa.
Official Ubuntu packages of the nvidia proprietary driver are quite stable.

Have you enabled the Steam Play/Proton option to enable Proton with all other titles? Some games want a specific build of Proton too, so it takes a bit of experimentation to find which works best with them (or Google-fu).
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

yes it tested all versions from experimental down to 7.0.4 / 6.3.8 and 5.13.6
Have you enabled the Steam Play/Proton option to enable Proton with all other titles?
sure :) otherwise an install is not possible if i remember correct for non linux native games, steamplay is enabled for all titles

the example game i used before, which was working fine with 7.0.4 was planetside 2, this is a gold status proton game

i also tried without any start parameter and with suggestions from protondb, it was running fine with

Code: Select all

%command% --disable-gpu
but now it does not even start the launcher, steam is stuck at "launching..." and no logs are produce as far as i can see with

Code: Select all

PROTON_LOG=1
i have also tested other windows games as well, which running also before, but none of them is working, all stuck at "launching..." steam window

i will give the nvidia ppa removal a try

Update:

i have complete removed the steam directory from home folder
so steam redownloaded its client, had to relogin and reconfigure all options and games
tested with a small windows game, it is launching and the steam window is now closing, while the library says the game is running (green text) i dont see any window opening, neither a log written to ~/...

any idea how to see why he is doing this?
