Unable to install Steam after getting my 7900 XT to work (SOLVED)

Post by JC Denton »

For some reason I'm unable to install Steam after getting my 7900 XT to work unless it's the flatpak version, which blows because I can't access my home directory with it.

Welcome to the forum, JC Denton.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Please also check this topic AMD 7900 XT not working properly after kernel and mesa update which specifically discusses Steam and the 7900 XT.

I have moved your topic to the Gaming forum because this appears to be a Steam-related issue rather than anything related to the operating system graphic drivers.

You are getting the same errors that person was getting in the post to which I linked. If you check this post the person mentions if they remove the oibaf-ppa (completely) then they are able to install Steam without problems.

Linux Mint 21.1 now has Mesa version 22.2.5 so one no longer needs a PPA in order to get the 22.2 minimum to have a 7900 XT working. That means you have the option to remove the oibaf-ppa and have Steam install and the GPU will work.

Or you can do as the person in the other topic did and install the flatpak version of Steam. They were able to get it to work (because flatpak uses their own mesa packages).

Removing the PPA fixed it. Thanks.
