Installing 201204 Debian for first time!

Post by DaComboMan »

Had been spoiled with other versions (installation procedure side by side with Windows 7).
Tried following installation guide but i got lost in the woods!

I've just created a new partition via Windows 7.
Debian wants two Swap ones, i believe i can do that too (via Windows),
will there be any other thing to do?

I really don't want to wipe anything from Windows.

Haven't been sitting idle!
After following the indications on the third post to this thread:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 9&t=100463
i finally managed to install Debian!

But! After following the procedure with GParted, i failed to find the "activate" option for each parts of the partition. Confirmed all changes.
Closed GParted and went through the next steps that seemed to offer the same thing as GParted but without the "amounts" for each part.
Nevertheless, this extra procedure completely wiped out Windows 7!
This i don't understand since with GParted everything was setup on a new partition.

Those instructions were for an empty drive, you don't setup a boot partition when you dual boot with Windows.
After you setup the partitions in gparted you have to click apply or whatever it is for changes to take effect, then back at the installer you refresh and select where to put the swap, root and home. Don't forget that grub doesn't go in a partition but in the drive (dev/sda). I'm pretty sure that if you search you will find better instructions around here  .

toomuchcoffee,

It's probably that last part "grub doesn't go in a partition but in the drive (dev/sda)"
you talk about that made Windows 7 disappear.

If at first you don't succeed!
