Linux Mint Debian installation problems

Post by Wedgetail »

Hi Forum,

This is my first time using Linux and I have installed Linux Mint Debian [AMD 64 Bit Edition] onto my machine, with a Dual-Boot with Windows 7. I have completed the installation and dual-boot setup without a problem.

Now that I am in Linux Mint, I have two main issues that I can't work out how to resolve. They are:
1. I have dual monitors, but only the Primary monitor will display.
2. I have a Raid 5 array on the machine, and it is not recognised.

Details of my machine are as follows:
System: Host Testing Kernel 3.2.0-2-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Distro Linux Mint Debian Edition
CPU: Quad core Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 (-MCP-) cache 6144 KB

From the above, disks 3, 4 & 5 are in a Raid 5 array controlled by the motherboard.

Can someone please give me some guidance on how to bring up the dual screens, and to be able to access the RAID 5 disk array.

Hi, first of all, if you are new to linux I would not recommend the debian edition. Try the main one instead. Having said that, the dual screens should be easy enough. Assuming you have installed the nvidia drivers, you should have the nvidia control panel also. Try opening a terminal and typing this command then hit enter:

Code: Select all

nvidia-settings
That should bring up the nvidia control panel where you can set up multiple monitor options.

Again though, I stress that for a first time linux user LMDE is not the way to go. From the LMDE release notes:

Code: Select all

Although it’s using Romeo for unstable packages, LMDE continuously changes as it receives updates and new software. Compared to a frozen version of Linux Mint which changes very little once it’s publicly released, it’s not as stable. Things are likely to break more often but fixes can also come quicker. For this reason, LMDE requires a deeper knowledge and experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
Debian is a less user-friendly/desktop-ready base than Ubuntu. Expect some rough edges.
