VLC and part files [solved]

I recently installed LMDE and was using linux mint 11 before. When I downloaded a video file I used to be able to open the part file with VLC and start watching the video imediately, and if the download was faster then the file playing it would continually get updated and play the video file to the end. I would get a question when opening the file telling me that the avi file was broken and if i would like to repair. I would click no as it was not broken only incomplete cos it was still downloading and everything would play smoothly. Now VLC wont even open/play the file!! Is there some plugin or something missing in LMDE?
I guess there was some plugin missing or something.
