Open Synaptic and search for HPLIP

Install HPLIP and HPLIP-GUI

Search for HP Toolbox in the menu under Preferences. Open it

Setup your Scanner/Printer in the HP Toolbox

*you may have to manually enter the ip address of you scanner/printer on your network. it is found by pressing the wifi button on your device
*you may have to manually add yourself to the group lpadmin. install gnome-system-tools and restart your desktop. look for users and groups, under the preferences menu. click on lpadmin and then preferences enter admin password and click on your user and you are done.

Press the SCAN button

Simple Scan will open with your Scanner/Printer listed by default

This will work for your network setups.

This even works on my laptop with my network setup, where simple scan wanted to scan my webcam.

It's that easy once you know

Thanks for sharing this lizbeth.
I am also happily using hplip for my HP LaserJet printer.

As for HP Scanners, when I left Windows behind, I was very disappointed that HP does not offer a Linux version of its otherwise excellent scanning software.
At least for me Linux' standard SANE scanning program is insanely complicated and not at all user friendly.
I especially missed HP's easy Highlight and Shadow settings.

Luckily, I found an excellent alternative in Epson's iscan software.

OK, I had to buy a new Epson scanner, but that is a negligible price to pay in order to quit the misery world of Windows.
I now own two Epson scanners under Linux: a flatbed and an automatic paper feed. Both work flawless.

In conclusion, HP printer support for Linux is OK, but I prefer Epson scanners under Linux.

PS: I have no financial interests in Epson, nor HP or MicroSoft.

One year later, printer support from the manufacturers for Linux is still quite suboptimal and scanner support rather dismal… I have found too that Epson scanners are supported best for Linux and had to dispose of several perfectly good HP scanners.  Disgraceful.  For ambitious scanning tasks I have found the commercial tool Vuescan from http://www.hamrick.com/ very powerful and worth its money; available for Linux. (No financial interest in any of these.)

I have an HPLaserJet4l. I did the installation of the HPLIP, yet when I print the fonts are too big hence most of the information to be printed is simply left out!!! I tried to install other drivers yet I had the same result. My solution was PUPPY linux. You can either install it or else use it as a live disk. It prints perfectly well !!!!!

I helped some people today with their HP PSC 1410 printer. A fresh LMDE install, fully updated. Nothing happened when printing a test page. The cause of the problem? The default paper size is A4 and the printer tray had 8-1/2 x 11 size. I understand not printing, but no blinking lights at the printer, no feedback dialogs in the printer tool. Just nothing.

After fixing that bug, I then tried the scanner and Simple Scan. Once again, nothing. I suspected a permissions problem. Eventually I found a udev rule and figured I had nothing to lose trying the rule. Huh. The scanner started working with the udev rule.

Next I tried testing their web cam. I installed cheese. Nothing. I installed v4lucp. Nothing. Then I tried guvcviewer. Nothing. Then I changed the default video mode to yuyv. Bingo.

I returned home to test my own digital camera with LMDE. Nothing.

I am not a novice. I have been using Linux systems for a long time. Yet this kind of breakage is still normal in the Linux world.

Hi! I have installed my AIO F4280 but I have one problem: if I turn on the AIO after login in, no program would detect it. If I turn on, before login in, it works as it should.

If I type in the terminal: scanimage -L, I only get it detected when I use sudo.

I follow the tutorial, and I also add my user to the saned and scanner groups.

How can I fix that issue?
Thanks in advance!
