Realtek Wireless connection hiccups

Post by Barti90 »

Hello there,
I've recently installed LMDE and encountered some problems with wireless. Network manager shows the network as "established" but, in practice, the connection fluctuates from "slow" to "non responding" (pinging 8.8.8.8 shows "destination host unreachable), then back to "slow". I have no idea what's wrong (I'm dual booting with Win7 where everything works fine). Previously I worked on Ubuntu 12.04 and had similar problems.

Output of some commands:

- iwconfig

Code: Select all

I tried reinstalling drivers; downloaded newest from Realtek website, compiled, installed, but nothing changed.
The machine is Toshiba L750 i5-2410m.
Cheers

Re: Realtek Wireless connection hiccups

Post by telenux »

You shouldn't have to install from the Realtek website and compile? Since, you have wifi working to some extent, you must have installed the realtek firmware? Non-free sources are in the repo and you did an apt-get update etc.?

http://wiki.debian.org/rtl819x

Is it possible there could be some interference, possibly with router or with the laptop?

Edit: Do you have any other computer to test where you connect to the internet? The connection itself could have issues, perhaps? I guess I am just suggesting to eliminate any potential culprit and troubleshoot that way.

Im having the same problem.
ping to 1.1.1.1 returns "destination host unreachable"
when it does connect its slow.
Im running the same card with the rtl8192ce driver
im thinking the current driver doesn't work that well.
there any alternatives? (other than getting a new card that is...)

UPDATE:
found this official new driver from realtek.
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... =true#2722
"We don't support kernel 2.6.24-2.6.34 directly, Because there are
lots of issues in mac80211 from kernel 2.6.24-2.6.34,
So we suggest you to use the latest kernel >= 2.6.35."
-Realtek Driver Readme

this is where my experience runs out.
Im going to need help compiling this driver from source.
