Strange Login message?

Post by onf78 » Tue May 07, 2013 1:19 pm

Hi ,

Just booted my machine, and straight after i have logged in, i get this message:

User's $HOME /.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. User's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by others.

I'm running LMDE Cinnamon 64-bit

Any input would be great

Well... why not follow what your system suggests and change that file's ownership/permissions like stated above? :)

In a terminal, run the following command:

Code: Select all

chmod 744 /home/<your user name>
Or, if you're in your home directory (the default location when you launch a terminal as a regular user):

Code: Select all

chmod 744 .
Do *not* set the permissions to 644 (as the error message suggests), oddly enough that sets the access permissions to "list files, create/delete, no access", which can cause some problems when trying to access your files...

(Seriously, how's that even possible..? Can list files, create and delete files, but can't actually access them in the first place to do anything with them..?)

In this case only one file requires attention (not the whole user directory), so 644 is ok.

BTW, what are the properties of that file now? Run this and post the output here:

Code: Select all

ls -l ~/.dmrc

Ah, it's easy, just run

Code: Select all

chmod 644 ~/.dmrc
and that should do it.
