MATE installed to LMDE / Cinnamon

Post by amphibole » Tue May 07, 2013 2:59 pm

Updated. See update at bottom.

First post on the forum.

Question synopsis:
Is there a known issue with MATE not showing up as a menu choice in the X login manager (mdm, for LMDE) sessions menu?

I have just used apt-get to install mate. But there has been no alteration in my menu.

Here is a breakdown of system details. I hope that I can provide relevant info up front that can help others help me.

Code: Select all

System: Host mint Kernel 3.2.0-4-686-pae i686 (32 bit) Distro LinuxMint 1 debian

           deb-src http://mirror.metrocast.net/linuxmint-debian/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
Hmm. Looking at that, I think that I do need to update my APT config: Wheezy is now (as of this posting, very recently) "Stable"?

Any help will be appreciated.

UPDATE Tue 07 May 2013 05:38:26 PM EDT

My menu has "GNOME 2" as a WM/DE choice (I think that's what the label is ... sorry, not sure (but it is some variation on "Gnome"), and not willing to impede current multitasking to log out right now). So, question: Is that the entry that represents MATE in the mdm medu? If so, my overall question is not relevant, and seemingly MATE was already installed (as I thought it would be based on ready the LMDE documentation) ... except that when I did

Code: Select all

dpkg -s mate-window-manager
earlier, the answer was "not installed". Now the answer is "Status: install ok installed". Full output:

Code: Select all

Package: mate-window-manager
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11
Installed-Size: 41

mate-session is the package you need, IIRC.
The menu entry should just be MATE.
Home PC: Xubuntu 14.04 x64, Nvidia GTX650, i7 3770K, 16GB RAM, Asus Xonar DX
Work PC: Mint 13 x64 XFCE, Nvidia GT620, i5 3470, 8GB RAM
Laptop: System76 Kudu Pro, Xubuntu 14.04 x64

using "software manager" which is in fact mintinstall. Why does so many software have 2 different names. Is that really needed?

I don't see mate-session
but there is mate-session-manager
which seems to be the right thing

"This package contains a session that can be started from a display manager such as MDM. It will load all necessary applications for a full-featured user session."

And here is why I want to replace cinnamon with mate... well, I get a ton of crashes, just by running hatari fullscreen, vnc to the PC or just having too many tabs in my browser (memory)

And also, the software manager "mintinstall" has some issue:
It throws me an alert box "The package 'mate-session-manager' could not be installed, Another application is using APT: dpkg" which is the dpkg started for doing the install.
some race condition here, probably while trying to get the new state of installed packages. Not really well designed stuff. I should have done a simple apt-get :-)
Needed to restart mintinstall so it sees mate installed. There's no refresh button.

Yeah, I know, make a bug report... usability bugs are never solved, so I stopped doing those.
End of helpful ranting, staring now my new mate.

EDIT: mate started... it's approximately 20 times faster than cinnamon, which is nice. But I have no window decoration, i.e. no window manager. Something is missing. This should not happen. In a terminal (which I don't find in the menu, so ctrl-alt-F1) run "metacity --replace" . I did not investigate why marco is not working.

so to get mate desktop it's:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mint-meta-debian-mate
(that will dump gstreamer for pulseaudio, but I had pulseaudio in cinnamon anyway)
and for more fancy

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mate-screensaver mate-backgrounds mate-themes
( I had previously this, but seems the above is the meta package needed.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mate-session-manager mate-terminal mate-icon-theme mate-utils mate-media mate-control-center mate-screensaver mate-backgrounds mate-themes mint-artwork-mate
)
