Mounting external Seagate NTFS drive

Post by Ken_g6 » Thu Jul 11, 2013 7:44 pm

I just purchased a new Seagate "Backup Plus" 3TB USB drive. My Windows XP 32-bit laptop can use it just fine. But I bought it primarily to back up my LMDE64 XFCE machine. And there I can't get it to mount. Both are accessing it with USB 2.0 ports, even though it's a 3.0-capable drive.

lsusb sees it:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 015: ID 0bc2:a0a4 Seagate RSS LLC
dmesg lists a whole host of attempts of some kind to read it:

Code: Select all

Suggestions?

P.S. Your search system excludes too many common terms, like "NTFS" and "USB", so it's hard to search for a solution to this.

Sorry to respond with a less than useful posting, but I am having the exact same issues with a Seagate Expansion 500GB. Even the log listing in the first posting looks just like what I'm seeing here, including the list of 'invisible' SCSI disks at the end.

After I bought the device and found it didn't work with LMDE, I did a google search for Seagate disks on Linux and the results were rather depressing...

The drives might come with some software or funny partitions pre-installed, so perhaps try reformatting the entire drive with gparted or "Partition Wizard" (boot CD, or via windows).

Edit: I used a 350GB Seatgate USB backup disk with no problems (until an old windows machine fried the electronics! - disk was still OK, tho, now installed inside the machine), don't recall if I had to reformat it or not.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

My XP 32-bit system is working with the drive - which I gather is not easy to do - and my Android tablet also works with the drive. I'd rather not mess up that compatibility just to try to get a backup drive working in Mint here by reformatting. I'm open to suggestions about modifications to Mint, though.

I'm currently accessing the drive through a share on my laptop. It's a long-term backup drive, so this is working well enough for now. Though the laptop is limited to 100Mbps == ~12 MB/s, all my machines are also limited to USB 2.0. Maybe one of these days I'll look for a laptop with gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0.

Yep using a 750gb FreeAgent Go
Manufacturer: Seagate

With zero issues in Cinnamon 14 or KDE 14.
May be a 15 issue? As haven't gone to 15 yet.
Or newer drives vs. older? As mine is 2-3 years old.

This seems to be a common problem. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/seagate-3tb-usb-hard-drive-does-not-plug-and-play-in-linux-mint-12-a-4175462589/

Based on that, I thought of running:

Code: Select all

$ sudo gdisk /dev/sdd
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Problem opening /dev/sdd for reading! Error is 6.
My next idea is to get a Raspberry Pi: http://www.howtogeek.com/139433/how-to-turn-a-raspberry-pi-into-a-low-power-network-storage-device/

But I'm not sure I want to do that yet.

If it's anything like mine, I wouldn't bother. I tried both FAT32 and Ext3 formatting and it didn't make any difference. Same kind of dmesg output as with NTFS formatting. So I reformatted it to NTFS.
Although trying the different formattings turned out to be a pointless exercise, it doesn't seem to have harmed the device. It's still working fine with my 32-bit XP system.

You mean LMDE? Could be.

Different drive (HGST mobile turbo) same problem using LMDE (UP 6).

I found a workaround that worked for me here:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=78980#p502932
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
add the following line there, then reboot:
blacklist uas
// Ich habe in meinem Leben eine Menge an Problemen gekannt, die meisten davon sind nie eingetreten.
// (Mark Twain)

Locked
