This problem is definitely NOT solved.
I still have no access to the data on my Canon Ixus 80IS (worked before UP 7) and the situation with my external HDD got worse with UP8 . With UP7 I could at least unmount and eject in two steps with caja and gnome-disk-utility resulting in a spindown of the external drive (before UP7 I just needed caja to do that). With UP8 the system just unmounts the drive and deletes it from the list. I have to wait x minutes till the external drive automatically performs a spindown.

I guess we have to separate your problem with this one. the camera is use PPTP connection while the external HD problem seems to be a problem of udisk. I got that one too. now I use hdparm to spindown my HDD before ejecting it.
