You have older versions of gnome-shell and gnome-shell-common (presumably from UP6). That's why you also have gjs 1.32 (from the Mint repo) and libgjs0b. If you'd upgrade gnome-shell to the version available in UP7 (it's 3.4.2-12), you'd have gjs 1.36 and libgjs0c I think.

I suggest doing that. Change your sources list to use Latest (and don't forget to remove "incoming" from packages.linuxmint.com just in case), upgrade gnome-shell and gjs and switch back to Incoming. The method to upgrade them is not obvious though: you need to explicitly tell apt-get to change repo preferences like it's shown in the UP notes. So you need to run this:

Code: Select all

apt install -t testing gnome-shell gnome-shell-common libgjs0c gjs

You got it!

I now have a much more normal list of package to update. gnome-shell and others have to be updated, no more removed…

As the download will be very long, I'll do that this WE.

and will be back if any problem occur. Otherwise that means everything is smooth.

Yesterday, there was a power cut in my flat so I got my laptop rebooting half upgraded... That's what I was thinking in fact.

So today I upgraded toward UP8 and It went smooth...

I was worried during the boot session since I had a lot of unusual messages. The time between NVIDIA logo and MDM was quite long (10 seconds) and between MDM and Cinnamon there is at least 20 seconds...

Most of the things are working well. Gnome 3.8 apps are now perfectly installed. So we can scroll down in Evolution, and click on the time bar in Totem
Evince 3.8 GUI is ugly. But I guess we will become used to it.

Eye of Gnome is still the only soft who do not want to maximize when pushed against the top of the screen. The HUD doesn't appear.

My only problem:

I have exactly the problem described here : http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 6&t=156989
My sound applet doesn't show up anymore. And in the control center, I can't see my sound device.

Totem plays movies with sound. Banshee too. On the Internet the sound is perfect. Only VNC (and Skype) doesn't not want to play sound with the same message than palimmo.
The problem is that I have no sound control now. The sound is at 100%. And the keys on my laptop (sound up & down) are not working anymore.

It may be related to one of the following packages :

Code: Select all

Update Pack 8

2014.01.13
The following packages are no longer needed in the Cinnamon edition:

gnome-session-common gnome-utils-common gnome-colors-common gnome-control-center nautilus gnome-screensaver gnome-sushi gnome-session-fallback gnome-session-bin gnome-session-flashback gnome-session-fallback gnome-themes gnome-user-guide gnome-control-center-data gnome-wise-icon-theme
I have removed all of them last weekend, and the first reboot since then was yesterday. At that moment the sound applet was missing...

Usually I solve it rebooting. Or running:

killall pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload

Reboot doesn't change anything for me.
Nor your commands ;)

It may be interesting to note that I do not have a process called 'pulseaudio' working... The solution may be here...

Edit : Pulseaudio is the cause. If I open Banshee then, TOTEM is no more able to read a movie.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

it should be the same with, let's say, VLC and youtube (flash).

I have found the solution

I deleted the ~/.pulse folder. Then I have done a

Code: Select all

pulseaudio --start
. Now it's working again. The sound applet is back in the fight and the volume up & down are working again.

Thanks palimmo. Your commands gave me a serious idea of my problem.

Clem: Seriously, I don't know if it's my system or all LMDE + Cinnamon...
But I can only see my desktop more than 15 seconds after the startup sound... There is a big problem here !

I can understand the delay before MDM appears. But I can't understand why I need to wait 20 seconds between login and desktop appearance. It used to be so fast with Cinnamon 1.2...
I think it's related to MDM and will probably go for GDM3 again. It's ugly but it was working fine... :(
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Hi,

Back after doing the update to UP8.

It works fine. But I have now a very strange problem.
One user, everything works fine.
The second user, I can't call many programs (as simple as gedit) as it immediately go to the "Oh no message".
All the extensions of gnome-shell have been removed, but it is still the same.

The log when crashing looks like that (the first line is really the first one, the previous line in the log is more than one minute old before the crash):

I have noticed GLib-GObject which I know is used by gedit.
I have noticed "App 'gnome-shell.desktop' respawning too quickly" and on the web it seems often related to bluetooth problem, but I am not using bluetooth and see nothing in the log refering to it. So for now I am a little stuck.
I think I have to check about the video driver too, but that's definitely not a part I am good with.

Still, the really surprising part is that the same computer works fine with the "initial" user.

EDIT: It seems it was only a problem of Theme. I change my Theme with Tweak tool to the same as the one in the user account that work. And no problem since!

This sounds like the old problem with gtk3-engines-unico. If that theme really uses Unico, the bug prevents any GTK+ 3 app from running, making them segfault at the start. Though I didn't know it can affect gnome-shell itself.

The bug has never been fixed: instead, gtk3-engines-unico has been removed from Testing (which means we won't see it in UP9). Without it, there should be no segfaults, but the themes using this engine will look ugly (because they don't "know" how to draw their elements). It's still better than segfault though, so I was thinking if I should ask Clem to remove that package from UP8 to prevent any future problems.

Hi,

I am a newbie and I have the same problem: the Volume icon from the right corner dissapeared and i can't change the volume of the system, not even from the "General Settings". In addition to that, the equalizer (PulseAudio Equalizer) is not working any more.
I tried some of the codes you proposed ("killall pulseaudio sudo alsa force-reload") but they didn't work.
I also searched for the "~/.pulse folder" but i couldn't find it.

Can you please explain the solution again?

Clem,
Looks like we have an issue here with UP8 and Pulseaudio...

Solution:
Open your home folder, and then push ctrl +h. This will show you your hidden folders. Then, find ".pulse" and delete it (or move it away or rename it...).
Then open a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

pulseaudio --start
Reboot. Everything should be fine. If not, right click on the task bar, remove the sound applet, put it back and it should appear again.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Small bug detected :

Open several applications like Nemo (twice) and Firefox.
Click on Firefox in the menu bar. Then click on one of the Nemo windows using the menu bar. Click on the same Nemo window on the Menu bar, it should minimize.

What you should normally see : Firefox.

What you will see : the other Nemo window.

Re: UPDATE PACK 8 FEEDBACK THREAD

Post by Monsta »

Okay, enough thread hijackings, let's get back to the topic. :)

Possible breakage: if you have both libpng12-0 and libpng12-dev installed, the upgrade may break on libpng12-0.

Code: Select all

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libpng12-0_1.2.49-5_amd64.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0', which is also in package libpng12-dev 1.2.49-4
This is probably related to the fix for bug 713270: the symlink libpng12.so.0 has been moved from libpng12-dev to libpng12-0 in version 1.2.49-5.

I don't really have a solution for that, but... I've fixed it with the usual sudo apt-get -f install and then simply resumed the process with sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, which completed fine. Most probably that means the problem fixed itself once both libpng12-0 and libpng12-dev were upgraded to 1.2.49-5. That makes me think we can avoid the issue by upgrading both libpng12-0 and libpng12-dev first, before updating the whole system.
Should we mention that in the UP notes?
