SSD firmware updates

Post by xfrank » Thu Mar 06, 2014 8:19 pm

This is not really a problem but a question. :?:
I share a SSD (Intel 520) between LMDE and Windows 7 in dual boot. The latter has his own Intel software to automatically update the firmware. I'm curious, If I update the firmware in windows, it will works for the entire SSD or only for the partition used by windows (and not the linux partition)? When I run the Intel update tool for windows, only the windows partition is shown.
By the way, Intel has also a tool to update the firmware for linux ( https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail ... =eng&wapkw ). But I'm not sure if this is needed, if the firmware update is applied from the windows partition to the whole SSD.
Linux everywhere. Active Distros in my many computers: LM17.3 (Cinnamon, Xfce); LM18.1 (Cinnamon,Xfce); LMDE 2 (Mate), MXLinux (Xfce), Debian 9 (Xfce).

Why not post your question on the Intel website or their forum.

The firmware is for the SSD controller. It affects operation of the whole drive.
