I am away from Linux for about 2 years....

It started with trying to see if I could update VLC....

Somehow I installed cinnamon, then removed both cinnamon and mate then adding mint-meta.

Nothing seems to allow me to login and the system is unstable.

I hit esc at the LM icon during boot and then hit ctrl-alt-F1 and "startx" to find I am on cinnamon.

How do I get back to Mate?

This thread is now 48 hours old with no response.
I am going to reinstall my system and see if I can get it stable again.

I am willing to still view any solutions to window manager missing at boot.
